Pontiac V8 Misc Tools
The Odd Jobs — Misc Tools for Pontiac V8s
Misc Tools is the Pontiac-specific end of the toolbox plus the measuring gear every build needs. Some of it exists only because a Pontiac V8 does something no other engine does, like the oil galley plug hidden behind the distributor, and some of it is simply the calipers and indicators you cannot assemble an engine without.
Butler stocks the Butler pipe plug tool for Pontiac galley and block plugs, the crank pinning kit for boosted combinations, oil pump primer shafts and pickup drivers, thread chasers, flex-hones sized for Pontiac balancers and cam gears, dial and digital calipers, dial indicators, Plastigage and engine storage bags.

More About Misc Tools
1. Measuring Tools You Use on Every Build
| Dial calipers, .001 to 6.000 in. | Hardened stainless and shockproof, with a protective case. |
| Digital calipers, .001 to 6.000 in. | Inside, outside and depth measurement with a metric or SAE LCD readout and a zero setting. |
| Dial indicator kit, 1 in. travel | .001 in. increments on a universal magnetic base. The one tool that shows up in degreeing a camshaft and checking crank end play, deck heights, dome heights and ring and pinion backlash. |
| Feeler gauge set | One blade of each size from .002 through .025, etched in metric and SAE, for rod side clearance, ring end gap, plug gap and valve lash. |
| Plastigage kit | Two green strips reading .001 to .003 in. and one red reading .002 to .006 in., in 12 in. lengths. We recommend a dial bore gauge and mics, but if you do not have them this is the next best way to verify crankshaft, main and rod bearing clearances. |
2. Pontiac Block and Galley Work
These are the parts of a Pontiac that catch people who have only built other engines.
| Butler pipe plug tool, BPI-1030 | Installs and removes the PP475 oil galley plug behind the distributor and the 3/8 hex block plugs. Read the warning before you lean on it: some plugs may be seized, and you may need to apply heat to remove them to keep from breaking the tool end. Plugs are not included. |
| 11 bolt water pump alignment studs, set of 2 | They hold the water pump plate and pump in place while you start the rest of the bolts. Pull the studs afterward and replace them with bolts, unless the pump is thin enough to leave adequate thread exposed. |
| Pontiac dipstick tube installation tool, BPI-1001 | Solid steel, for use with N304 or factory block dipstick tubes. |
| Brush Research Flex-Hone, 180 grit | The 1" size works for Pontiac cam gear honing, and the 1.25" and 2.25" sizes for Pontiac harmonic balancer and timing gear honing. The tool is intentionally oversized so it self-centers in a hand drill or drill press. |
| Thread chasers | A Butler six piece set in 1/4-20, 5/16-18, 3/8-16, 7/16-14, 1/2-13 and 9/16-12, or the ARP five piece set with a three-flute design. Chasers clean a dirty hole rather than cutting a new thread in it. |
3. Oil System and Ignition
| Butler Pontiac oil pump primer shaft, BPI-039P | Fits the Pontiac 301, 326, 350, 389, 400, 421, 428 and 455. Prime the system and confirm oil at the rockers before a fresh engine fires. |
| Oil pump pickup driver tool, 3/4" | For seating 3/4 in. diameter pickups. |
| Oil filter cutter, adjustable aluminum | A diagnostic tool that opens a used filter so you can look for contaminants. Put the filter in a vise, set the tool on top, tighten and twist. Our own view is honest: by the time you see material in the filter it is usually rebuild time, but it costs almost nothing and can help diagnose a problem. |
| MSD Advanced Pro Timing Light | An inductive light for all ignition types, stable from 0 to 10,000 rpm, with a metal pickup that will not melt against a hot manifold. |
| Spark plug wire crimping tool | Steel frame with insulated handles, for 7-8 mm plug wire. |
4. Crank Pinning for a Blown Pontiac
| Butler Pontiac crank pinning kit, BPI-PCH-1027 | A blower drive loads the crank snout far beyond anything an accessory belt asks of it, and a single factory keyway is thin insurance against the balancer or blower hub slipping. The kit contains a Pontiac steel alignment hub, hub alignment bolt, drill bit and three dowel pins, and lets you drill a guided hole for a 3/16 steel dowel pin in the crank and balancer without removing the crank or carrying it to a machine shop. It is not for use with BDS blower hubs. |
5. Storage, Handling and the Rest
| Pontiac engine bag | 2mm plastic, 23 x 17 x 50 in., sized to cover a short block. |
| Pontiac jumbo engine bag | 3 mil plastic at 44 x 52 in. for a larger assembly. |
| Cylinder head and crank bags, set of 2 | 2mm plastic at 10 x 8 x 36 in., the right shape for a crankshaft or a pair of heads. |
| Pilot bushing driver, .590 in. ID | For pilot bushings and bearings in the Muncie, Saginaw, BorgWarner and T-10 and other boxes with a .590" pilot shaft. |
| AN wrench, single end | Anodized aluminum, -6 to -16, so you tighten a fitting without rounding the hex. |
An engine that sits on a stand for six months between machine work and assembly needs a bag more than another gauge. Dust and humidity do more damage to a fresh short block than most people expect.
