Valley pan and windage tray fasteners are two jobs at opposite ends of the engine that share one trait: the hardware has to match the specific panel you bought. A thin aluminum valley pan and a stock replacement pan do not use the same studs, and the two common Pontiac windage trays do not use the same bolts.

1. Valley Pan Hardware
The valley pan seals the lifter valley from the intake side. Whether you need bolts or studs depends entirely on which pan is going in.

2. Windage Tray Hardware — Two Trays, Two Kits
Do not mix these. The bolt head has to be reachable with a socket once the tray is in place.

3. Check Clearance Before the Pan Goes On
| Rotating assembly | turn the engine over by hand with the tray installed and the pan off. Stroker cranks and long rods change what the tray is living next to. |
| Main studs interact | if the tray mounts off main cap hardware, confirm the nut and stud stack does not push the tray into the counterweights. |
Buy the fastener kit that names your tray or pan by part number. These are small kits built for one specific panel, and a near-fit here is the kind of thing you find out about with the oil pan already sealed.
