Notice: All flat tappet cams require break-in oil and the use of oil additives. They also require a more extensive break-in process.
**Due to so many variable that can affect flat tappet cam and lifter life from break-in and beyond Flat tappet cams are subject to manufacturer’s warranty ONLY. This is due to stringent break-in procedures that must be followed (including removing inner springs for break-in), rocker ratio, the special oils/additives required, lifter bore inconsistencies of size and angle in stock blocks, issues of lifter bore wear and oil bleed off on 40-50 year old Pontiac blocks and so many other variables that can affect cam/lifter life both right from the point of break-in as well as durability after break-in. Keep in mind that just because an engine “ran for 40 years with the stock flat tappet cam and lifters” doesn’t mean that a more aggressive cam that also requires new, stronger springs will have the same life. Or even make it through break in. Block/Lifter bore issues are magnified once you change cams, springs and/or rocker ratio. If you have an issue with a flat tappet cam/lifters and you believe it’s a warrantable issue then Butler Performance will return the cam to COMP/Lunati/Melling for inspection and any warranty/replacement will be at their discretion. We do not warranty flat tappet cams in any way past the manufacturer’s warranty. We do not warranty any parts damaged by or parts needed to replace a flat tappet cam/lifters including any labor involved. BUTLER PERFORMANCE HIGHLY RECOMMENDS UPGRADING TO HYDRAULIC ROLLER CAMS.

More About Hi-Torq Hydraulic Flat Tappet Cams and Cam Kits
The Physics Behind Lifter Wear
The term flat tappet is slightly misleading. The lifter face actually has a slight convex crown, and the cam lobe features a microscopic taper. This precise geometry forces the lifter to spin in its bore during operation. The spinning motion prevents the lobe from digging into one spot. High-zinc oil protects this delicate friction zone before the work-hardened wear pattern sets in permanently.
Selecting The Right Lobe Specifications
Bigger duration numbers do not automatically create a faster car. Picking the right hydraulic flat tappet cams means matching the camshaft with your complete drivetrain. Key variables include:
Vehicle weight
Rear axle gear ratio
Torque converter stall speed
Intake manifold design
Dropping a massive cam into a heavy classic Pontiac with stock gearing will destroy low-end torque. Align your airflow goals with your realistic cruising RPM.
Exploring Your Valvetrain Options
Street cruisers often prefer hydraulic setups for quiet operation and zero lash adjustments. Racers looking to extract maximum high-RPM horsepower might step up to solid flat tappet cam kits to eliminate hydraulic lifter pump-up. Every valvetrain choice dictates specific pushrod lengths and spring pressures.
Built For Your Specific Pontiac
Butler Performance engine builders manually review your chosen components. We verify your valve spring pressures and lifter compatibility to ensure your setup makes reliable power.

FAQs
Do I need new pushrods when changing my cam?
A new aftermarket camshaft changes your base circle and alters your valvetrain geometry. Always use an adjustable checking pushrod to measure the exact required length before final assembly.
Can I reuse old lifters on a new camshaft?
No. Flat tappet lifters wear into the specific microscopic taper of the exact cam lobe they originally matched. Mating used lifters to a fresh camshaft will destroy the new lobes almost instantly. Always install brand new lifters with a new cam.
What causes lifter bore wear in vintage blocks?
Decades of thermal cycling and friction create microscopic inconsistencies in the lifter bore size and angle on 40-to-50-year-old Pontiac blocks. This wear allows internal oil bleed-off, which drops oil pressure at the lifter bore and starves the valvetrain of crucial lubrication exactly when it needs it most.
