The Right Length Out of the Box — Stock Replacement Pushrods for Pontiac V8s
Stock replacement pushrods are the correct-length rods for a Pontiac V8 going back together the way it came apart. Pontiac used two main lengths across the V8 family plus a separate Ram Air IV rod, and picking the wrong family puts the rocker in the wrong place on the valve tip before the engine ever runs.

1. Two Stock Lengths
Know which family your engine is in before anything else. The difference is nearly half an inch.
| Early 326, 389 and 421 | the Melling replacement is a 5/16" rod listed at 8.715", measuring approximately 8.693" long. Comp's High Energy rod for these engines is 8.684" and fits all 1962-67 Pontiacs that have an OEM 8.686" factory pushrod length. |
| 350, 400, 428 and 455 | the Melling replacement is a 5/16" rod approximately 9.130" long. Comp's High Energy rod is 9.146" and fits all Pontiacs with an OEM factory length in the 9.136" to 9.416" range. |
| Each or set | Melling's rods are sold individually and in sets of sixteen, so a single damaged rod does not mean buying a whole set. |
2. Ram Air IV Is Its Own Part
Do not substitute here. The Ram Air IV rod is a different diameter.
| 11/32" diameter | the Melling Ram Air IV stock replacement pushrod is 11/32", not 5/16", and measures approximately 9.200" long. |
| Sold each and in sets | Butler stocks it both ways, which matters on a numbers-matching Ram Air IV engine where you may only need one or two. |
| Why the difference | the larger diameter rod goes with the Ram Air IV valvetrain. Fitting a 5/16" rod in its place changes the guide plate and stiffness picture entirely. |
3. Hardened for Guide Plates
If the heads have guide plates, this is not an optional feature.
| Comp High Energy rods | both the 8.684" and the 9.146" sets are hardened for guide plate use, so the plate does not saw into the rod. |
| Soft rods and plates | a non-hardened rod running against a steel guide plate wears a groove in itself. It is a slow failure that ends with a rod letting go. |
| No plates, no requirement | on a head with original pressed-in studs and no guide plates, a standard replacement rod is fine. |
4. When a Stock Replacement Is Not Right
Butler flags this on the Comp rods, and it catches people converting to a roller cam.
| Hydraulic flat tappet only | the Comp High Energy rods do not fit hydraulic roller cams and lifters. They are a hydraulic flat tappet part. |
| Why | a retro-fit hydraulic roller lifter has a completely different seat height, in this catalog anywhere from 2.130" to 2.71". That moves the required pushrod length well outside stock. |
| Other triggers | milled heads, a rocker ratio change, longer valves or a different lifter family all mean a custom length rod rather than a stock replacement. |
5. The Butler Upgrade at Stock Length
You can keep stock geometry and still put a much stronger rod in the engine.

If your heads have been milled or the engine is getting anything other than a stock cam, check length with an adjustable checker before ordering a fixed-length set.
