1. With head gaskets, or without
That is the first fork, and it usually comes down to whether you already know what head gasket the build needs.
| With Butler head gaskets | Butler packages the overhaul set around its own composite head gaskets — one version with the 400-455 gasket, and one with the universal gasket that fits 1965-and-later 326 through 455 and also carries the chambers for the 389, 421 and early 1967 400. |
| Without head gaskets | the same set minus the head gaskets, for builders who are going to Cometic MLS or copper and want to choose that separately. Butler stocks this version too. |

2. What is in the Butler set
Butler's overhaul sets use the same gaskets that go into the engines it builds. The contents list is worth reading before you order anything separately.
| Top end | valley pan gasket, valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets (1965 and up stock), intake-to-timing-cover O-rings, exhaust manifold gaskets and valve seals for intakes and exhausts. |
| Bottom end and front | right and left oil pan rails, cork rear oil pan gasket, polymer rear oil pan gasket, front oil pan/timing cover gasket, timing cover gasket and front main seal. |
| Accessories | water pump gasket for either the 11-bolt or 8-bolt pump, oil filter housing gasket, oil pump gasket, distributor gasket, thermostat housing gasket and fuel pump gasket. |
| What is not in it | no rear main seal. Order that separately by main journal size — 3.00" for 326 through 400, 3.25" for 421, 428 and 455. |

3. Complete kits and the Ram Air / Super Duty exception
Best Gasket's complete engine sets are the other route, and they include a rope rear main seal in most versions.

Whichever set you buy, lay everything out against the engine before the first gasket goes on. That is how you find out you need the early intake gaskets or a rear main seal while the parts counter is still open.
