Pontiac V8 Crank & Cam - Bolts & Washers
Front of the Engine — Crank & Cam - Bolts & Washers for Pontiac V8s
The crank and cam hardware at the front of a Pontiac V8 is small, cheap and easy to overlook — and it is holding the harmonic balancer and the timing set in place. A worn crank key, a missing cam washer or the wrong thickness spacer shows up later as a walked balancer or a timing set that will not stay put.
Butler stocks Pontiac crank bolts, cam bolts, keys, washers, and packaged bolt-key-washer kits for 1959-77 engines, plus ARP balancer bolt kits and Butler cam plate and crank pulley fastener kits.

More About Crank & Cam - Bolts & Washers
1. Crank Bolts, Washers and Keys
The centerbolt holds the balancer to the snout. Everything about that joint wants to be right the first time.
| Grade 8 crank bolt | BPI-CRK-5/8 is the Pontiac crank bolt in Grade 8, 5/8"-18 x 1 3/4". |
| ARP balancer bolt kit | ARP-190-2501 fits 350-455 engines, 5/8"-18 with 1.580" underhead length, rated 190,000 psi, washer included. |
| ARP crank washer | ARP-200-8754 is 8740 chromoly, 5/8" I.D. x 1.600" O.D. x .305" thick with no chamfer. It works with all Pontiac harmonic balancers including ATI, and with either a stock-type or an ARP crank bolt. |
| Keys | PIO-PK-126 is the standard Pontiac crank key at 1.370" x .188" x .393", sold each. |
| All three together | BPI-Bolt-Kit-CRANK packages the Grade 8 5/8"-18 x 1 3/4" bolt with an ARP washer and the key. |
2. Cam Bolts, Cam Washers and the Fuel Pump Eccentric
The cam bolt does two jobs on a Pontiac: it holds the timing gear and it retains the fuel pump eccentric. What you are running up front decides which washer you need.
| Cam bolt | BPI-CAM-1/2 is the Grade 8 Pontiac cam bolt, 1/2" x 1" fine thread, for 1959-77 engines. ARP-190-1001 is the 1/2-20 cam bolt and washer for 350-455. |
| Running a stock fuel pump eccentric | PIO-PG-276 is the correct thickness cam washer to retain it. Thickness is the whole point — an approximate washer does not clamp the eccentric properly. |
| Not running one | BPI-CW-101 is the timing chain gear retaining washer and spacer used when a stock fuel pump eccentric is not in the engine, which is the case on most electric-pump and EFI combinations. |
| Cam keys | PIO-PK-9 is the standard cam key for 1959-77 and covers Pontiac 301, 326, 350, 389, 400, 421, 428 and 455. |
| Kit form | BPI-Bolt-Kit-CAM packages the cam bolt, key and washer for 1959-77. |
3. Cam Plate and Crank Pulley Hardware
Two small kits that keep the front of the engine from being an assortment of whatever was in the coffee can.
| Cam plate | BPI-Bolt-Kit-CP is a four-piece hex head Grade 8 cam plate fastener kit. |
| Crank pulley, Butler | BPI-Bolt-Kit-CRK is an eight-piece kit using 1" allen head bolts, washers included. |
| Crank pulley, ARP | BPI-Bolt-Kit-CRK-ARP is the ARP version of the same kit, also with washers. |
4. Torque at the Front of the Engine
Butler's Pontiac torque chart covers the three fasteners in this section that matter most.
| Harmonic damper centerbolt | 160 ft-lbs with thread locker. This is the highest torque figure on the outside of a Pontiac V8 and it is regularly left loose. |
| Cam sprocket / upper timing gear | 45 ft-lbs with thread locker. |
| Camshaft thrust plate | 15 ft-lbs with engine oil. |
| ARP hardware | if the bolt is ARP, follow ARP's specification rather than the factory number. |
When a balancer is coming off for a timing set or a front seal, plan on a new key, the right washer and fresh thread locker going back on. It is the cheapest part of the job and the one that decides whether the balancer stays where you put it.
