1. Bellhousing and Transmission Side
The back of the engine is where a swap usually stalls out over a bolt.
| ARP bellhousing bolts | ARP-129-0901 is a hex kit for stock GM bellhousings, 3/8-16 with 1.375" overall length and washers included. It is not for use with Lakewood blow-proof bellhousings. |
| Butler bellhousing bolts | BPI-Bolt-Kit-BH is the Grade 8 hex version, 3/8-16 at 1.5" overall length with washers, also for stock GM bellhousings and not for Lakewood blow-proof units. |
| Torque converter bolts | ARP-230-7302 covers Powerglide, TH350 and TH400 and most aftermarket converters, 7/16-20 with .725" underhead length, nuts and washers included. |
| Pressure plate bolts | ARP-190-2201 is 3/8-16 at 180,000 psi with 9/16" wrenching. PIO-859024 is a 3/8 x 1 kit with a 1/2" hex head, recommended for CFO clutch and pressure plate assemblies so a socket can reach the head without interference. |
| Torque | Butler's chart lists the bellhousing at 40 ft-lbs with engine oil and the clutch pressure plate at 25 ft-lbs with thread locker. |
2. Starter Hardware and Ignition Connectors
Small parts that decide whether the engine cranks cleanly or howls.
| Starter bolts | IMI-ASB is a 4" pair, and MOT-45658 is the Type 1 long 3/8-16 x 4-5/8" pair for the longer mounting pattern. |
| Alignment shims | MOT-02336 is a GM straight assortment of one 1/64", two 1/32" and two 1/16" shims. Shimming corrects starter alignment and is the usual cure for whining or grinding from a mis-spaced starter. |
| Connectors | IMI-PLUG1 is the single pigtail connector used on all Pontiac IMI starters. IMI-DPC is the double pigtail diode connector used with points distributors, connecting to and energizing the coil. |
3. Distributor, Fuel Pump and Dipstick Hardware
Stainless replacements for the small fasteners that rust and round off first.
| Distributor | ABO-Kit-DI is a hex head stainless distributor bolt. ARP-190-1702 is a hex distributor stud kit with 9/16 hex and no broach, recommended on all IAII aluminum blocks to save wear on the threads in the block. |
| Fuel pump | ABO-Kit-FP is a four-piece hex head stainless fuel pump fastener kit. |
| Lower dipstick tube | BPI-Bolt-Kit-N302 is a four-piece fastener kit that works with the N302 tube. |
4. Loose Hardware and Thread Prep
The parts you end up needing at 9pm on a Saturday.
| Nuts | ARP-300-8333 is a set of ten 12-point Custom 450 black oxide nuts in 7/16-20 right hand thread. |
| Washers | ARP-200-8530 is a special purpose washer kit in 8740 chromoly, 7/16" I.D. x 13/16" O.D. x .120" thick, set of ten, no chamfer. |
| Thread chasers | ARP-911-0006 is a five-piece set covering 1/4-20, 5/16-18, 3/8-16, 7/16-14 and 1/2-13 with a three-flute design. BPI-900-200 is Butler's six-piece set, adding 9/16-12. Chasers clean dirty threads without cutting new ones, which is what you want before torquing anything into a used block. |
If you are assembling an engine on the stand, buy the thread chaser set first and run every hole before a single fastener goes in. Every torque figure on the chart assumes the threads are clean.
