A complete crossmember-back exhaust system is the honest way to finish a Pontiac. Instead of handing a muffler shop a pile of bent pipe and hoping, you get mandrel-bent stainless tube, a crossover, hangers and clamps engineered for your body and floor pan. Everything lines up, and the car sounds the way you decided it would.

1. Find your chassis first
These systems are cut and bent for a specific floor pan, so the body is the first filter. Some cutting may be required depending on the system and the car.
| 1964-72 A-body, GTO, LeMans, Tempest | by far the deepest shelf, including dedicated 1970-71 GTO valance exit systems. |
| 1967-69 F-body, Firebird | crossflow and quarter panel exit systems, with tip sets chosen by year. |
| 1970-74 F-body and X-body | rear exit and quarter exit systems in 2.5" and 3.0". |
| 1975-81 F-body, Trans Am and Firebird | its own part family, because the late second-gen floor and bumper are different. |
2. Pipe size, material and crossover
| 2.5" or 3.0" | 2.5" suits a stock-to-strong street Pontiac and keeps ground clearance. 3.0" is for a big-cube, big-power combination. All tubing is 16 gauge and mandrel-bent, so the stated size is the actual flow size through the bends. |
| 409 or 304 stainless | 409 is the standard construction and resists corrosion well. 304 polished stainless is the show-quality option on the systems that offer it. |
| X-pipe, H-pipe or neither | Pypes offers an X-pipe crossover, an H-bomb H-pipe, and systems with no crossover at all. The crossover is what smooths the note and balances the two banks. |
| X-Change | on some A-body and F-body systems, an X-Change crossover kit lets you run open exhaust after the crossover without cutting anything. |
3. The muffler, and what is not in the box
| Street Pro | the quietest of the three performance mufflers, for a car that gets driven a long way. |
| Race Pro | the loudest street-legal-looking option. On crossflow systems the Race Pro is described as two mufflers in one transverse casing. |
| Violator | the aggressive middle, and the one most Pontiac owners end up picking. |
| No mufflers | most systems are also sold muffler-delete so you can add your own or run a Pypes electric cutout. |
Tips are usually sold separately and the correct tip depends on your exit style and year. Clamps and hangers are included on most systems and installation is designed to be done at home without special tools. If you are running factory manifolds rather than headers, check whether the system you want needs manifold downpipes.
