Make the Port You Need — Weld-In Bungs for Pontiac V8s
Weld-in bungs are how you create a port that does not exist. When a tank, oil pan, valve cover or fabricated piece has no threaded boss where you need one, a bung is welded in and you have a proper AN or NPT port to work from.

1. What Butler stocks and what each one is for
Earl's lists these as available for any plumbing situation and many custom applications, which is fair. The size you choose depends entirely on what is going to thread into it.
| -10 AN male weld fitting | 6061 bare aluminum, made in the USA, for landing a -10 hose end on a tank, cell or fabricated piece. A good match for pump suction and oil cooler plumbing. |
| -12 AN male weld fitting | the same construction in the larger size, for feed, vent or drain lines where flow area is the priority. |
| 1/4" NPT female O-ring seal weld fitting | a female pipe port with an O-ring seat, for fittings, sensors and adapters that need a 1/4 pipe thread. |
| 1/8" NPT female weld fitting | the small port, typically used for a gauge, a sender or a pressure tap. |
2. Welding aluminum bungs, and the part people forget
These are aluminum, which means the piece they go into has to be aluminum too, and the fitting has to survive the heat.
| Aluminum to aluminum | a 6061 bung is welded into an aluminum tank, pan or panel. It is not a fix for a steel tank. |
| Protect the threads | heat and spatter ruin a thread quickly. Mask or plug the port before the torch comes out. |
| Position before you weld, not after | once it is in, the angle the line leaves at is permanent. Mock up the hose end and check clearance to the header, the frame and the suspension first. |
| Leak test before assembly | a weld you cannot inspect from the inside is worth pressure testing while the piece is still off the car. |
If you need a sealed pass through a fuel cell wall rather than a welded port, a fuel cell bulkhead is the right part. Butler stocks those in -10 and -12 AN.
