Pontiac V8 Adapter Fittings
Making Two Threads Agree — Adapter Fittings for Pontiac V8s
Adapter fittings are the pieces that let an AN hose talk to hardware that was never threaded for AN. Pontiac fuel pumps, carburetors, regulators, fuel blocks and oil ports come with pipe thread, inverted flare or O-ring seats, and an adapter is what turns those into a -6, -8, -10 or -12 flare the hose end can seal against.
Butler stocks Russell AN flare to NPT adapters in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 pipe thread, 90 degree elbows for tight exits, and brass hose barb adapters for tying new AN line into an existing rubber fuel line.

More About Adapter Fittings
1. AN flare to NPT, the adapter you will buy most
Nearly every threaded port on a Pontiac fuel or oil system is NPT pipe thread. The adapter converts that port into an AN flare, and the two numbers on the part are the only ones that matter: the dash size and the pipe size.
| -6 flare to 1/4 NPT and 3/8 NPT | the common landings on mechanical fuel pumps, regulators and carburetor inlets on a street Pontiac. |
| -8 flare to 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 NPT | the same job one size up, for a larger carburetor inlet or a higher output pump. |
| -10 flare to 1/2 NPT | for pump inlets, filters and oil ports on the volume side of the system. |
| -12 flare to 1/2 NPT and 3/4 NPT | the largest adapters here, for fuel cell and suction side plumbing. |
| Finish | Butler stocks most of these in black and Endura so the adapters match the hose ends rather than standing out. |
2. Elbows, and the pumps that need them
Some ports point the wrong way, and no amount of hose routing fixes that. A 90 degree adapter turns the line at the port instead.
| 90 degree -6 flare to 1/4 NPT | Butler lists this elbow, in black and in Endura, as the way to adapt a Holley 12-389 or Carter 6907 fuel pump from its 1/4" NPT outlet to -6 AN. If you are running one of those pumps, this is the fitting. |
| 6AN to 3/8 O-ring 45 degree | a steel fitting Butler stocks specifically to clear Sniper EFI and drop base applications where the fuel fitting hits the base pan. A common and frustrating clearance problem with a one part answer. |
3. When you are not converting the whole car to AN
Plenty of Pontiac owners want a clean AN line at the engine and are happy to leave the existing hard line and rubber alone. Butler stocks adapters for that too.
| 6AN to 3/8 hose barb, brass | connects a -6AN hose to a 3/8 hose barb, which Butler describes as a good choice when you are connecting new lines to an existing hose with a runner line. |
| 1/4 male pipe to 3/8 hose barb, brass, 90 degree | listed for the Holley 12-389 and Carter F6907 pumps, adapting the pump's 1/4" NPT outlet to a 3/8 hose barb for conventional rubber line. |
| 3/8 NPT male to 3/8 hose barb | a black anodized fitting suitable for carbureted or EFI use where you need a barb off a 3/8 pipe thread. |
4. Getting the seal right
Adapters have two different sealing surfaces on one part, and they are sealed in two different ways. Mixing that up is the usual cause of a weeping fitting.
| The AN flare side seals on the flare | metal to metal on the 37 degree seat. It needs no sealant of any kind, and adding tape or paste there does nothing but risk contaminating the fuel system. |
| The NPT side seals on the thread | a tapered pipe thread needs a fuel rated thread sealant. Keep sealant off the first thread so nothing can shed into the line. |
| Count your adapters before you order hose | every adapter is a joint, and every joint is a place that can leak. If a different dash size removes two adapters from the system, that is usually the better plan. |
