Pontiac V8 Fittings & Hoses

Plumb It Once — Fittings & Hoses for Pontiac V8s

Fittings and Hoses are how everything else on the engine gets connected. On a Pontiac V8 the fuel system is usually what drives the parts list: a mechanical pump with a 1/4 in. or 3/8 in. NPT port, a Q-jet or Holley inlet, and an owner who wants it done in AN hose instead of rubber line and worm clamps.

Butler stocks Russell hose ends, adapters, bulkheads and hose, Earl's weld-in bungs, Holley and F.A.S.T. EFI line kits, and Butler fuel pump to carb inlet kits built for specific pump and carburetor combinations.

More About Fittings & Hoses

1. AN Size and What It Threads Into

AN sizes are dash numbers, not inches, and almost every connection on a Pontiac needs an adapter to get from an NPT port on a pump, carburetor or block to a flare fitting on a hose end. Butler stocks the common adapters in all three Russell finishes — Black, Endura and Red/Blue — so the plumbing matches end to end.

-6 adaptersFlare to 1/4 in. and 3/8 in. NPT, straight or 90 degree elbow. The 90 degree -6 to 1/4 in. NPT is the piece that adapts a Holley 12-389 or Carter 6907 mechanical pump.
-8, -10 and -12 adaptersFlare to 1/4 in., 3/8 in., 1/2 in. and 3/4 in. NPT for larger feed lines, regulator ports and return lines.
Hose barb and specialty3/8 in. NPT to 3/8 in. hose barb for carb or EFI, -6AN to 3/8 in. hose barb where you are tying new line into existing hose, and a 45 degree -6 O-ring fitting made specifically to clear Sniper EFI and drop base applications where the fuel fittings hit the base pan.
Banjo and bulkheadA -6 banjo fitting for the 5/8 in.-20 inlet found on Sniper EFI, Edelbrock Thunder and Performer series and Carter AFB carburetors, and -10 and -12 fuel cell bulkheads in black anodize.

2. Braided Hose or Push-On Hose

Two families, two different jobs, and the hose ends are not interchangeable between them.

Russell Pro Flex braided hoseSold by the foot in -4, -6, -8, -10, -12 and -16. Takes a reusable Russell hose end in straight, 45 degree or 90 degree, in Black, Endura or Red/Blue. This is the assembly you build on the bench with a vise and a cutoff wheel.
Russell Twist-Lok push-on hoseStocked in -6 by the foot and in 25 ft rolls, with matching Twist-Lok hose ends in straight, 45 and 90 degree. No crimping, no cutting a braid, and easier to route on your back.
Weld-in bungsEarl's 6061 aluminum weld fittings in -10 and -12 AN male and in 1/8 in. and 1/4 in. NPT female, including an O-ring seal version, for fabricating a port where the factory never put one.

3. Butler Fuel Pump to Carb Inlet Kits

This is the part most people get wrong on the first try: the fitting at the pump and the fitting at the carburetor are almost never the same thread. Butler builds these kits around specific combinations so the right adapters come in one box.

By pumpKits for RobMc mechanical pumps, for Carter and Holley mechanical pumps, and for Edelbrock mechanical pumps.
By carburetorDual inlet Holley, or Pontiac Q-jet with its inverted flare inlet.
What is in themStraight and 90 degree hose ends, full flow swivel 45 degree elbows, the correct NPT and inverted flare adapters, a 3 in. competition fuel filter and two feet of Pro Flex or Classic II hose to trim to fit. RobMc kits come in -6 or -8, in Black or Endura.
Also stockedRussell and Holley dual inlet carburetor lines for the 4150, including the longer lines that Holley Ultra XP bowls require, and a Russell billet fuel Y-block with a 3/8 in. NPT inlet, dual 3/8 in. NPT outlets and a 1/8 in. NPT gauge port.

4. Complete Fuel Line Kits, Carb and EFI

If you are plumbing a car from the tank forward, a kit beats buying pieces one at a time and finding out you are two fittings short on a Saturday.

Carbureted, return styleA 25 ft universal kit with a low pressure bypass regulator adjustable from 5 to 10 psi, filter, quick disconnects and -6AN Twist-Lok fittings. Not recommended for pumps over 255 lph, and a -6AN carb adapter is still required at the carburetor.
EFI, bypass styleThe same idea with an EFI bypass regulator adjustable from 35 to 90 psi, a 10 micron filter and 25 ft of hose, suited to many aftermarket EFI kits.
Holley and Sniper40 ft EFI fuel line kits in 3/8 in. Vapor Guard hose with pre and post filters and the bulkhead fitting to return fuel to the tank, offered with or without a pump.
F.A.S.T. EZ-EFI25 ft hose and fitting kits built specifically for EZ-EFI, in in-line and in-tank pump versions.
Not just fuelButler also lists a PCV line kit that routes the PCV hose under the intake on Edelbrock RPM and Crosswind intakes, including hose, PCV valve, grommet, clamp and fitting.
