Distributor Gears
This is from Holley/MSD engineering:
The PRD13906 is machined from 1144 Cold Rolled Steel, and it is case hardened via salt bath ferritic nitrocarburizing – what we refer to as QPQ. It then has a Black Oxide conversion coating applied for corrosion resistance.
Melonizing is a trade-name specific version of salt bath ferritic nitrocarburizing – so technically, no – MSD gears aren’t melonized. However, they undergo a process that is functionally equivalent.
Not knowing the exact material of the steel billet roller cams, I would not take a chance – especially since we have no way to test beforehand. I would recommend the Bronze or Polymer gears to be safe on roller cams.
