Butler's valve listings cover the 670, 16, 62, 13, 12, 48 and 061 heads on a 5.095" intake and 5.110" exhaust length, along with the 17, 18, 46 and 47 castings shared with the 350 in the 1968-1970 years.

1. Know Which 400 Head You Have

These years cover more than one casting family, and the difference shows up in valve length.

The long-valve group	Butler lists the 670, 16, 62, 13, 12, 48 and 061 heads on a 2.11" by 5.095" intake and a 1.77" by 5.110" exhaust.
Shared with the 350	the 17, 18, 46 and 47 castings in the 1968-1970 range are listed for both 400 and 350 heads, with the smaller 1.96" intake on the 350 side and the larger intake on the 400 side, both at 5.095".
Seat angle	the intakes in this group are listed on 30 degree seats where several other Pontiac valves run 45. Decide this with your machinist before the seats are cut.

2. The Taller Spring Trick And Its Price

The 5.095" and 5.110" valves are the reason people with other castings end up reading this page.

What Butler says	those valves may be used in 4X, 6X, 96, 7K3 and 5C heads to gain taller spring height, but you must use a longer pushrod.
Why it works	the longer valve raises the retainer, which buys installed height for a bigger spring in a casting that otherwise runs out of room.
What to check	pushrod length with an adjustable checker, rocker geometry, and retainer-to-seal clearance at full lift. All three move when the valve gets longer.

3. Putting The Head Back Together

Guides and seats	cast or bronze guides for Pontiac cast iron heads in 11/32", with seat work to suit the valve size you chose.
Springs	rated around a 1.600" installed height. Butler notes that cutting valve seats may be required in a stock cast iron head with some hydraulic roller springs, so settle the spring choice before the heads go on the machine.
Pushrods	the 400 is in the longer pushrod group with the 350, 428 and 455.
Let Butler spec it	the cast iron Head Builder Kit matches Ferrea valves at stock install height, springs to your cam specs, chromoly retainers and locks, seals for machined guides and a shim kit, all chosen from your casting.

Give us the casting number and the cam. A 400 head rebuilt for a stock hydraulic cam and one built for a roller need different springs out of the same casting.
