Pontiac V8 428 1967-69
It Is The Casting, Not The 428 — 428 1967-69 for Pontiac V8s
The 428 was Pontiac's big-inch engine for 1967-69, and its heads are not a 428-specific part. They come from the same 1967-69 D-port casting families used across the full-size Pontiac V8s of those years, which means the head parts you need are chosen by the casting number, never by the displacement stamped on the block.
A rebuild is assembled from Butler's cast iron head parts: Ferrea stainless valves in the length your casting takes, cast or bronze guides, seats, seals, springs matched to the cam, retainers, locks and shims. Bring the number off the head.
More About 428 1967-69
1. Why The Displacement Does Not Pick The Parts
Every Ferrea valve listing in Butler's cast iron program is written against casting numbers, not against engines, and the 428 is the clearest example of why.
| Shared castings | the same D-port heads of the 1967-69 years turn up on 400s and 428s. Two 428s can need two different valve lengths depending on what is bolted to them. |
| Find the number first | pull a valve cover and read the casting. That number puts you in a valve length group, and the group is what you order from. |
| Pushrods | the 428 sits in the longer pushrod group with the 350, 400 and 455, not with the 326, 389 and 421. |
2. Rebuilding Heads You Want To Keep
Most 428s being rebuilt today are in cars where the original castings are worth saving, so the work is about preserving them.
| Guides | 11/32" cast or bronze guides for Pontiac cast iron heads. Bronze if the engine will see high spring pressure or a high rocker ratio. |
| Seats | have the machinist assess the exhaust seats before you decide on valve size. Seat condition usually drives the rest of the plan. |
| Valves | Ferrea stainless in the length and diameter your casting takes, in the stock size for a factory-correct rebuild or a step up if you are running a bigger cam. |
| Springs | cast iron head springs are rated around a 1.600" installed height. Butler notes that cutting valve seats may be required in a stock cast iron head with some hydraulic roller springs, so choose the spring before the machine work. |
3. Two Ways To Go
| Numbers-matching rebuild | stock-size valves, stock-pressure springs, fresh guides and seals and a clean valve job. Nothing about the head changes. |
| Building the torque up | a larger exhaust valve and a matched spring package for a performance cam. Butler's cast iron Head Builder Kit exists for this: choose your casting and Butler matches valves, springs to your cam specs, chromoly retainers and locks, seals for machined guides and a shim kit. |
Call with the casting number and tell us whether these heads are going back on a survivor or onto a build. A 428 is worth doing once and doing right.
