Pontiac V8 428 Pistons
Stock Stroke and Stroker — 428 Pistons for Pontiac V8s
428 Pistons share a bore family with the 400 but not a stroke. The 428 came with a 4.000" stroke crank, so what is already a stroker piston in a 400 is the stock-stroke piston here. That changes the compression height, the rod length and which dish volume gets you to a pump gas compression ratio.

1. Bore sizes on a 428
The 428 uses the same nominal bore as a 400, so the overbore sizes line up the way you would expect.
| Standard 4.120" | The factory bore. Both the Keith Black and Icon listings for the 428 reference a 4.120" stock bore. |
| .030" over (4.150"), .040" over (4.160"), .060" over (4.180") | The three common rebuild sizes, stocked in Keith Black hypereutectic and Icon forged sets of eight. |
| 4.155", 4.181" and 4.200" | The sizes the Butler/Ross Quick Ship and DSS forged stroker pistons are listed for, on blocks that have been sonic tested to support them. |
2. Stock 4.000" stroke rebuild
This is the path most 428 owners are on, and it is the one place the 428 genuinely differs from a 400.
| Keith Black -6cc flat top | Hypereutectic 390 alloy with 16 percent silicon, diamond-machined skirt, spiral lock rings, listed for the 428 at 4.000" stroke in .030", .040" and .060" over. Designed for 14 degree heads, 1967 and later. Butler lists a matching piston and ring set version as well. |
| Icon -10cc dish | Forged 2618 with a D-shaped dish, a 1.595" compression height on the 4.000" stroke, .980" pin, 1/16", 1/16", 3/16" ring grooves, press-fit or floating. Butler shows it near 10.9:1 with a 71cc chamber, 9.4:1 at 87cc and 8.7:1 at 96cc. |
| DSS forged at 4.000" | A -7cc flat top and a -14cc dish, both at 1.585" compression height on a 6.625" rod with a 1.2, 1.2, 3.0mm ring pack. |
3. Stroking a 428 past 4.000"
| 4.210" stroke | DSS lists a -18cc dish at 1.480" compression height. Butler/Ross Quick Ship covers this stroke at a 4.181" bore. |
| 4.250" stroke | Compression height drops to 1.285" on the DSS dish, which moves to a 6.800" rod and a .990" pin. Butler/Ross Quick Ship flat tops and milled dish tops are stocked at 4.150", 4.155", 4.160" and 4.181" bores for this stroke at a 1.295" compression height. |
| 4.500" stroke | DSS lists a -24cc dish at 1.160" compression height. At that stroke the dish volume is doing most of the work of keeping compression sane. |
| Butler milled dishes | The Quick Ship dish forgings arrive at Butler as thick flat tops and get CNC finished in house to the dish volume your chamber calls for, rather than forcing you to pick the nearest off-the-shelf number. |
4. Heads, rings and the fitment notes that matter
| Head style | Icon lists its 428 pistons for OE or Edelbrock style heads with a centered pin. The Keith Black flat top is cut for 14 degree heads from 1967 on. |
| Compression target | Butler recommends no more than 9.5:1 on cast iron heads and no more than 10.5:1 on aluminum heads for pump gas. Give the counter your chamber cc and the dish choice follows. |
| Rod clearance | Some stock rods need to be narrowed and the balance pad removed to clear the inside of the pistons. Butler flags this on both the Icon and DSS listings. |
| Early blocks and power adders | Ross builds an oil ring support version of the -8cc flat top for early blocks with deep notches and for nitrous or boost applications. |
| Rings | Order the ring set to the finished bore, not the nominal overbore. Quick Ship flat tops list pins and rings as not included; the milled dish versions include pins only. |
The short version: on a 428, decide whether you are keeping the 4.000" stroke or going past it, then let the compression height and dish volume fall out of that. Butler can confirm the combination before anything gets machined.
