The Odd One Out — 301 Pistons for Pontiac V8s
301 Pistons cover Pontiac's late, lightweight V8, which is a smaller and thinner casting than the 326 through 455 family it is often confused with. A 301 does not share pistons, bore sizes or rod journals with those engines, so nothing off a 350 or 400 shelf will work in one.
Butler does not list a stock replacement 301 piston set. Where a 301 build makes sense, the answer is a custom piston, and Butler's Ross and DSS custom programs are built to any bore and stroke. Call Butler's tech line with your measurements before ordering anything for a 301.

More About 301 Pistons
1. A 301 is not a small 350
This is the single most common mistake on this engine. The 301 is a later, lighter Pontiac V8 design, and its dimensions do not carry over from the traditional 326 through 455 family.
| Different bore family | The piston sets Butler stocks are cut for the traditional Pontiac bores, from the 326 at 3.750" up through 455 sizes past 4.200". A 301 falls outside those sets. |
| Different bearing parts | Even the bearings are separate. Butler lists 265 and 301 main bearings as their own group, apart from the 326-350-389-400 and 421-428-455 groups. |
| Do not substitute | There is no safe way to make a 350 or 400 piston work in a 301. If a supplier tells you otherwise, measure before you believe it. |
2. What a 301 build actually looks like
| Custom is the path | Butler's Ross custom program builds pistons to any bore and any stroke in flat top, dish or dome, in 2618-T61 aluminum. DSS builds custom 2618 sets in flat top or dish. Those are the realistic routes to a 301 piston. |
| Measure first | Finished bore, stroke, rod length, pin diameter, compression height and chamber volume. A custom piston is only as good as the numbers it was cut from, and custom pistons are not returnable. |
| Compression target | Butler's general Pontiac guidance still applies. No more than 9.5:1 on cast iron heads and no more than 10.5:1 on aluminum heads for pump gas. |
3. Talk to a tech before you buy
Butler builds Pontiac V8s for a living, and the honest answer on a 301 is that it is a specialty job rather than a catalog order. Bring the block measurements and the goal for the engine, and Butler can tell you what is worth doing and what is not. If the plan is a larger displacement Pontiac, the 326, 350, 389, 400, 421, 428 and 455 piston pages are where the shelf stock lives.
