Bare castings are for the builder who wants the aluminum but not the assembly. You get the head with guides and seats and nothing else, so the valve size, the spring package, the porting and the chamber work are all still your decisions — or your head shop's.
Butler carries Edelbrock Performer RPM bare Pontiac castings in both port styles: D-port in 65cc as-cast and 72cc and 87cc Fast-Burn CNC chambers, and round port in 72cc and 87cc, bare, CNC chambered, or semi-machined for a professional porter to finish.

1. Who Should Buy a Bare Casting
A bare pair is cheaper than a complete pair for a reason, and the reason is the work that has not been done yet.
| You are porting them | Nobody wants to pay for a valve job twice. If the heads are going straight to a CNC program or a hand porter, buy them bare. |
| You have a valvetrain plan | Oversize valves, a specific spring, a titanium retainer package. Buying complete and throwing the contents away is expensive. |
| You are not doing either | Then a complete head or a Butler Built set is the better value, because the machine work and the assembly are in the price. |
2. D-Port Castings
Stock Pontiac D-port exhaust exits, for use with standard D-port aftermarket exhaust systems.
| Engine range | Designed for 1962-79 389, 400, 421, 428 and 455 cid V8s with a 4.060" or larger bore, and usable on a 350 with 1.66" exhaust valves and the block clearanced. |
| Chambers | Three dual quench sizes — 65cc as-cast, and 72cc and 87cc with Fast-Burn CNC machined chambers. |
| The casting itself | A356 aluminum heat treated to T6 spec, 5/8" deck thickness, 204cc intake and 145cc exhaust runner volumes, angled spark plugs relocated closer to the exhaust valve, improved oil return passages, ductile iron interlocking seat inserts, and a machined heat crossover. |
3. Round Port Castings
Patterned after the 1969-70 Ram Air IV head, with Ram Air IV exhaust port flanges, for 1965-79 389-455 engines.
| Chambers | 72cc for higher compression applications and 87cc as the street-legal, low compression version for 92 octane, offered as plain bare castings or with CNC machined chambers. |
| Runner volumes | 215cc intake and 175cc exhaust, which is the reason round port is the porting core when 340 cfm is the target. |
| Semi-machined | One round port casting is sold semi-machined and must be finished by a professional cylinder head porter. It is not a shortcut to a cheap bare head. |
