The front cover of a Pontiac V8 is a stack: timing cover to block, water pump to cover, thermostat housing on top of the manifold. The bolts are different lengths in nearly every hole, and Pontiac used both an 8-bolt and an 11-bolt water pump, so the kit has to match the pump you actually have.

1. Eight-Bolt or Eleven-Bolt Water Pump
Look at the pump before you order. The two patterns are not interchangeable and the kits are built around them.

2. Timing Cover and Thermostat Housing

| Why stainless here | these are the fasteners that live in coolant spill and road salt. They are also the ones that snap off in the cover when they come out ten years later. |
3. Torque and the One Odd Bolt
| Timing cover to block | 35 ft-lbs with engine oil per Butler's Pontiac chart. |
| Timing cover to intake | the single bolt that ties the front cover to the intake manifold is installed with a rubber o-ring and light RTV silicone, and torqued to 10 ft-lbs. Treating it like the rest of the cover bolts is how that corner ends up weeping. |
| Water pump to cover | Butler's chart calls for engine oil on those threads. |
| Order of assembly | cover first and squared to the block, then the pump. Snugging the pump before the cover is set is how the front seal ends up loaded off center. |
If the front of the engine is coming apart for a timing set anyway, replacing all of this hardware at once costs little and saves the snapped-bolt extraction job next time.
