Valve cover hardware is decided by the cover and the gasket, not by the engine. A stock stamped cover, a Butler fabricated cover and an aftermarket cover with a CNC bottom rail all want different length fasteners, and a thick gasket changes the length again.

1. Bolts, and Which Head Style

| Allen head stainless | ABO-Kit-VC-BP is the allen head stainless kit and fits Butler Fabricated and Moroso Fabricated covers. It comes with washers: use them with thinner gaskets and leave them out with thick gaskets. |
2. The Stud Kit and Where It Does Not Fit
BPI-Bolt-Kit-VC is a 24-piece valve cover stud kit with hex nuts, washers and 1-1/2" studs. Read the fitment before ordering.
| What it fits | stock style covers, or Butler Win covers, where shorter bolts are used. It is intended for thick Butler valve cover gaskets or aftermarket covers with a CNC bottom rail. |

3. Torque and Clearance
| Eight ft-lbs, with engine oil. | That is Butler's Pontiac chart figure for valve covers, and it is the most commonly exceeded number on the whole engine. Over-torquing dishes the rail on a stamped cover and squeezes a thick gasket out sideways. |
| Check rocker clearance | studs and nuts sit taller than a bolt head. On a converted screw-in stud valvetrain with a tall rocker, confirm the nut clears the inside of the cover. |
| Re-snug after a heat cycle | gaskets settle. Come back to them warm, at the same low figure. |
Order the hardware with the gasket in hand. Gasket thickness is what decides between a bolt, a bolt with a washer, and a stud.
