One Gasket at a Time — Individual Gaskets for Pontiac V8s
Sooner or later you need one gasket, not a whole set. Individual gaskets covers everything on a Pontiac V8 that is not a head gasket, an intake gasket or a pan gasket — timing cover, water pump, valley pan, oil pump, oil filter housing, distributor, thermostat housing and fuel pump.
Butler stocks these one at a time, in the year-correct and bolt-pattern-correct versions: timing cover gaskets and seals for 1960-63 and 1964-up, water pump gaskets in 4-bolt, 8-bolt and 11-bolt, cork and black fiber valley pan gaskets, valley pan installation kits, and a timing cover gasket kit that bundles the whole front of the engine.

1. Timing cover, front seal and the intake O-ring
The front of a Pontiac is where a surprising number of leaks start, and it splits by year.
| Timing cover gasket | Butler stocks the 1960-63 gasket and the 1964-and-up gasket separately. They are not the same part. |
| Timing cover seal | the 1963-79 front crank seal, plus a cork 1961-63 timing cover seal for the earlier engines. |
| Intake to timing cover O-ring | the small seal at the front of the valley, .980" OD by .635" ID by .250" thick. It is the leak nobody finds because it weeps down behind the water pump. |

2. Water pump gaskets, by bolt count
Count the bolts on the pump, not the year on the title. Butler stocks all three patterns.

| 11-bolt, 1969 and newer | sold as a set of two — this pump uses a gasket on each side of the plate, so buying one is buying half. |
3. Valley pan, PCV and the two installation kits
The valley pan seals the lifter valley and carries the PCV. The kits are application-specific and do not cross over.

| Installation kits | each kit includes the valley pan gasket, the grommet, the PCV valve and a bolt kit with two sealing washers. One kit is built for the Tomahawk TPP-TP-041S pan and specifically does not fit the APE-N178WD; the other is for stock pre-1968 pans and the reproduction N178WD, and specifically does not fit the Tomahawk pan. Check which pan is on your engine before you order. |
4. Oiling, ignition and cooling odds and ends
These are the small parts that hold up a rebuild when one is missing from the box.
| Oil pump gasket | the standard Pontiac oil pump gasket, plus a copper oil pump gasket made for the Butler Pro Series pump. |
| Oil filter housing gasket | the open-center gasket, which fits both the 90 degree and 120 degree filter housings. |
| Distributor gasket | the standard Pontiac distributor base gasket, and a separate Super Duty distributor gasket. |
| Thermostat housing and fuel pump | both stocked individually, and both worth replacing any time they come apart. |
If you are doing a full rebuild, an overhaul set covers most of this in one box. Individual gaskets exist for the other case — the water pump you are changing in the driveway, the distributor you just pulled, or the one gasket that came up short when you opened the kit.
