Pontiac V8 Full Custom Hyd & Solid Roller Cams
Ground To Your Lobes — Full Custom Hyd & Solid Roller Cams for Pontiac V8s
When none of the shelf grinds are right, Butler has custom camshafts ground to your lobes. This page covers the full custom hydraulic and solid roller cams for the Pontiac V8: pick the intake lobe, the exhaust lobe and the lobe separation, and Comp Cams grinds it.
Four options are stocked: a custom hydraulic roller and a custom solid roller on a standard core, and Comp Cams and Butler billet versions of each on a 50mm core. A 4-7 lobe swap is available on the billet cams. Butler will also make a cam recommendation for your combination.

More About Full Custom Hyd & Solid Roller Cams
1. The Four Custom Cores
| Custom hydraulic roller | a Comp Cams custom grind on a standard core, ground to your choice of lobes. The right answer when a combination falls between the stocked Hi-Torq steps but does not need a billet core. |
| Custom solid roller | a Comp Cams custom solid roller on a standard core. For a higher-rpm combination where the hydraulic lifter is the limit. |
| Billet custom hydraulic roller, 50mm | a Comp Cams and Butler billet core, ground to your lobes. The larger core and billet material are what a serious valvetrain and an aggressive lobe want under them. |
| Billet custom solid roller, 50mm | the same billet core in solid roller form, and the top of the range. |
The 50mm billet cams are also available with a 4-7 lobe swap, which changes the firing order. That is a build-level decision, not a bolt-in, and it has implications for the headers, the ignition and the oiling that need to be settled before the cam is ground.
2. What a Roller Cam Requires
These two requirements apply to every cam on this page, hydraulic or solid.
| Distributor gear | all hydraulic and solid roller cams require either a bronze or a polymer distributor gear. The cast iron gear that runs against a flat tappet cam will not survive against a roller core. |
| Valley pan | retrofit hydraulic and solid roller lifters use a tie bar, and a factory valley pan will not clear it. An aftermarket or fabricated pan is part of the job. |
| Spring package | a custom lobe means custom spring requirements. The lobe you choose dictates seat pressure, open pressure and coil bind clearance, and those cannot be picked afterward. |
3. How To Order One Sensibly
A custom cam is only better than a shelf grind if the specification behind it is right. The lobe catalog is long, and picking from it blind is worse than buying a known profile.
| Bring the whole combination | displacement, bore and stroke, cylinder heads and their flow, compression ratio, intake, exhaust, transmission, converter stall, rear gear, tire and what the car actually does. |
| Know your rpm ceiling | it decides hydraulic versus solid more than anything else does. |
| Ask for the recommendation | Butler will spec a cam for your combination rather than leaving you to pick lobes from a chart. On a custom grind that is the part worth using. |
