Get It Out of the Way — Alternator Relocation Kits for Pontiac V8s
Alternator relocation kits move the alternator off the factory high mount so it stops fighting for space with a big air cleaner, a tall valve cover, an evac pump drive or an electric water pump. On a Pontiac V8 that usually means dropping it to a low mount position on the opposite side of the engine.

1. The Universal Bracket and What It Costs You
The simplest route is a bracket that repositions the alternator on the engine you already have.
| Either side | The universal kit mounts the alternator on the driver or passenger side. It is a genuinely universal Pontiac fit rather than a year-specific part. |
| The trade | Driver side mounting is for cars with no power steering. Passenger side mounting is for cars with no A/C. Decide which accessory you are willing to give up before you order, because the bracket cannot make room that is not there. |
| Best case | Butler flags this kit as great when using electric water pumps, where the factory alternator mount has lost the bracketry it used to bolt to anyway. It is also the bracket used alongside a Butler evac pump kit. |
2. The Butler Serpentine Low Mount Kits
These go further: they convert the crank to a serpentine pulley and drop the alternator to a low mount in one package, so the whole front of the engine ends up on one belt.
| Electric water pump version | Converts to a serpentine crank pulley and relocates the alternator low. It bundles the March crank pulley, the March serpentine alternator pulley, a GM alternator fan, the universal relocation bracket and hardware, and the belt. For use with an electric water pump only. |
| Mechanical water pump version | The same conversion for an engine keeping its mechanical pump, and it adds the March water pump pulley and cover. This one is for 1969 1/2 and later engines with the 4.5" water pump. |
| Alternator pulley | Both kits include the serpentine alternator pulley unless you already have an alternator with a fan, in which case that piece is left out. Check what is on your alternator before you order. |
3. What to Confirm First
Three checks keep the kit from arriving and sitting on the shelf.
| Water pump | Electric or mechanical decides the kit outright, and the mechanical kit is cut for the 4.5" pump used from 1969 1/2 on. An earlier 4" pump engine needs that sorted first. |
| Accessories | Power steering on the driver side or A/C on the passenger side rules out that side for the universal bracket. |
| Belt | Each serpentine kit ships with its own belt. Deviate from the kit contents and you will need to measure; Butler stocks 6-rib belts in several lengths. |
If you only need the alternator out of one spot, the universal bracket does it cheaply. If you are going serpentine up front anyway, buy the complete low mount kit and let the pulleys, bracket and belt arrive matched.
