Pontiac V8 Holley TBI EFI Systems

Carb Off, EFI On — Holley TBI EFI Systems for Pontiac V8s

Throttle body injection is the EFI that bolts where the carburetor came off. The injectors, throttle position sensor, idle air control and usually the ECU itself all live in a carburetor-shaped body on your existing intake manifold, so the conversion does not require a new intake, new linkage or a new air cleaner.

This is the general TBI category for the Holley line. The current Holley throttle body systems Butler stocks are listed under Sniper and Sniper 2, Sniper Stealth and Terminator X Stealth, which is where to start when you are shopping a live part number.

More About Holley TBI EFI Systems

1. What throttle body injection actually changes

The point of TBI is how little of the car has to change. Fuel metering moves from jets and metering rods to injectors and a computer; everything around it stays.

The manifold staysA throttle body bolts to the flange your carburetor used, so a period intake or a numbers-matching manifold can stay on the engine.
The linkage staysThese bodies are designed around carburetor-style throttle linkage and, on most kits, factory transmission kickdown arrangements.
The air cleaner staysAir entry is normally machined for stock-style air cleaners, which is the whole reason a lot of Pontiac owners choose TBI over port injection.
What you gainCold starts that do not need a choke, stable idle, and closed loop fuel control that corrects for weather and altitude instead of making you re-jet.

2. How these systems get sized

Two numbers decide the system, and neither of them is displacement.

Flange4150 square bore or spread bore. That is set by the intake already on the engine, and a spread bore system exists specifically so a Quadrajet intake does not need an adapter plate.
Injector capacitySystems are rated separately for naturally aspirated and boosted use. An eight-injector body usually carries the same naturally aspirated rating as a four-injector body and only pulls ahead under boost, so buy eight injectors for a power adder, not for a big N/A engine.
Hood clearanceMeasure it. Adapter plates and taller bodies are where stock hood conversions go wrong.

3. The fuel system is still the project

Bolting on the throttle body is an afternoon. Feeding it is the part that decides whether the conversion is any good.

Pressure and returnThese systems run high pressure compared to a carburetor and generally want a return line back to the tank. A mechanical pump and a carbureted line will not support one.
Where to startButler's Complete EFI Solutions pages bundle an EFI-ready tank, in-tank pump, line kit and regulator with the system so the whole conversion arrives as one decision.
