Under the Intake — Valley Pans and Accessories for Pontiac V8s

The valley pan is the lifter valley cover that sits under the intake on a Pontiac V8, and it does more than keep oil off the intake floor. It carries the PCV provision on most engines, it has to clear whatever lifters you are running, and it has to live in the gap between the block and the bottom of the intake runners without touching either.

Butler stocks the Tomahawk stock-appearing steel pan cut for roller lifters, a stock reproduction pan for the early engines and thick aluminum pans for race use, plus the PCV valves, grommets, gaskets and bolt kits that none of the pans include.

More About Valley Pans and Accessories

1. What the pan has to do on your engine

Three questions decide which pan you need, and they are worth answering before you shop.

What lifters are in ita stock pan was drawn around flat tappets. Hydraulic roller lifters and most solid rollers are taller and wider, and they need a pan with clearance cut for them or an aluminum pan with the room built in.
What intake is on italuminum pans and the Tomahawk pan are not for use with EGR intakes, and the 1973 to 1979 EGR manifolds are the usual reason a pan will not work.
Whether you need a PCVthe steel reproduction pans include a PCV provision. The aluminum pans do not, and Butler does not recommend them for street use unless you are running a crankcase vacuum pump.

2. The pans and the accessories are separate purchases

This catches people out on almost every order. A valley pan generally arrives as a pan, and the pieces that seal it and vent it come from the Valley Pan Accessories section.

Valley Panssteel stock reproduction pans for the early and late engines and thick or cast aluminum pans for roller lifter and race builds.
Valley Pan AccessoriesPCV valves in long and short 90 degree styles, the grommets each one requires, installation kits that bundle gasket, grommet, PCV and bolts, replacement stud kits and a PCV block-off grommet.

Note that the installation kits are pan-specific. The kit for the Tomahawk pan does not fit the early stock reproduction pan, and the early kit does not fit the Tomahawk. Order the kit that names your pan.

3. The clearance check nobody should skip

Butler says it plainly in its own product copy: valley pan to intake clearance on a Pontiac must always be checked, with stock or aftermarket pans and intakes alike. You may have to grind the bottom of the intake runners where they sit against the pan, or grind the top edges of the pan, or both. Do it with the intake dry on the engine before any sealer goes down. A pan pinched between the block and the manifold will not seal, and it can crack.
