Fuel Injection Without the Fight — 500hp+ Pontiac EFI Muscle Car Engine on Pump Gas for Pontiac V8s

This is the same 500hp+ pump gas Pontiac Butler builds for muscle cars, specified with self-tuning EFI instead of a carburetor. The foundation is a 400 block at 460-467 cu. in. on a 4.250" stroke, topped with Edelbrock D-port aluminum heads and a Holley Sniper throttle body that looks like a Quadrajet from three feet away.

The list covers the rotating assembly, heads, hydraulic roller valvetrain, Hyperspark ignition, oiling, sealing and the whole supporting cast of Pontiac-specific brackets, tubes, seals and bolt kits that an EFI conversion still needs.

More About 500hp+ Pontiac EFI Muscle Car Engine on Pump Gas

1. What This Build Is, and Who It Suits

A 467 cu. in. Pontiac on a 400 block with self-tuning electronic fuel injection, built around 9.5 compression so it lives on pump gas. It is aimed at the owner who drives the car, in traffic and in weather, and is tired of choking a carburetor on a cold morning or re-jetting for altitude.

Why EFI herecold starts, part-throttle drivability and a consistent air-fuel ratio, without giving up the look of a carbureted engine bay.
Self-tuningthe Holley Sniper system learns as you drive and comes with a handheld monitor, so a laptop is not a prerequisite.
Same bottom end as the carbureted buildthe difference is the induction, the ignition and the fuel supply, not the short block.

2. The 467: 400 Block, 4.250" Stroke

The rotating assembly is Butler's balanced 460-467 cu. in. stroker package for the 400 block, available as a finished balanced assembly or as a build-your-own kit if your machinist is handling assembly.

Cranka Scat or Eagle 4340 forged 4.250" stroke crank, 3.00" main, 2.200" big-block Chevy rod journal, or a new cast crank for a street engine without power adders.
PistonsButler/Ross forged flat tops in a 4.181" bore, with an offset ring support version for early 400 blocks with deep notches. Custom dish pistons can be milled to a compression target if your heads call for it.
Rods and rings6.800" bushed full-float rods, pin fitted, with Total Seal Classic Race rings and clearance-selected bearings.
Block cautionButler does not recommend a 4.250" stroke on 557-casting blocks, and suggests holding those to 4.000" stroke and under 500 hp.

3. D-Port Aluminum Heads and the Roller Valvetrain

This build uses the D-port head rather than a round port, which keeps exhaust manifold and header options wide open on a street car.

HeadsEdelbrock 87cc aluminum D-port Pontiac heads with Fast-Burn CNC chambers, configured for a hydraulic roller. Butler also builds stock-port cast iron D-port heads if you want to keep the original look.
Lifters and rockersJohnson high performance hydraulic roller lifters with Scorpion Endurance 1.65 roller rockers.
Pushrodscustom-length two-piece chromemoly pushrods with .020" oil restriction, which matters once you are feeding a roller valvetrain.
Lifter boresa lifter bore reinforcement brace is on the list. On a high-spring-pressure roller engine in an older block it is cheap insurance.

4. Sniper EFI and Hyperspark Ignition

The induction side is where this list stops resembling the carbureted build.

Throttle bodya Holley Sniper EFI unit in the Quadrajet footprint with a self-tuning ECU and handheld monitor, so it bolts to a stock-pattern Pontiac intake and keeps a factory-appearing air cleaner.
Ignitiona complete Holley Hyperspark EFI-ready ignition kit built for Pontiac, so the ECU controls timing properly instead of fighting a mechanical advance curve.
Distributor gearaftermarket distributors use a .500" shaft. The BOP composite gear replaces a worn bronze gear and will not shed metal into the oil.
Plug wires8.5mm wires cut to fit with a separator kit, routed away from the headers.

5. Oiling, Sealing and Pontiac-Specific Fitment

Most of this list is the unglamorous half, and it is the reason builds off this page go together in one weekend.

Oilinga Butler PRO 80psi oil pump with a drive shaft and pickup screen, a three-quarter length windage tray with its spacer kit, and Driven break-in and run oils.
Rear mainthe one-piece dual-lip Viton seal for 3.00" main blocks, with its relocated parting line and double lip.
Valley panthe Tomahawk stock-appearing pan clears roller lifters and is for non-EGR intakes only. Always check pan to intake clearance; grinding the bottom of the intake runners or the top edge of the pan is normal, not a defect.
Dipstick and tubesthe correct upper and lower block tubes matter, and the lower tube changes if you run a windage tray or a 4-bolt main block.
Front of the enginenew 11-bolt timing cover with the stainless divider plate, sleeves and O-rings, high-flow aluminum water pump, thermostat and the timing cover to intake wedge spacer kit.

6. Behind the Engine and In the Car

Two things get decided before the engine goes in, and both are easy to get wrong.

BalanceButler balances internally, so the engine takes a neutral balance flexplate or flywheel, not a factory offset-weighted one. SFI approved 166-tooth flexplates and billet steel flywheels are on the list for both bolt patterns.
Starter and pilot bearinga mini starter clears headers that a factory unit will not, and a manual car needs the correct pilot bearing.
Fuel supplyEFI wants steady pressure and volume. Plan the pump, lines and return before the engine lands, not after.

7. Dressing It and the Small Hardware

The last third of the list is fasteners, gaskets and trim, and it is what separates a build that goes together from one that stalls.

Valve coversstock chrome covers, or Butler's fabricated aluminum covers in two heights. With 1.65 roller rockers, clearance under the cover is worth checking before you buy.
Gaskets and seals5/16" thick high density valve cover gaskets, a standard intake gasket set with heat crossover block-off plates, and a fuel pump block-off plate if the mechanical pump comes off.
Crankcase ventilationa 90 degree PCV valve with the correct valley pan grommet, and a breather on the other cover.
Bolt kitsa complete stainless accessory bolt kit, a cam bolt and thrust plate, crank bolt and washer, and flexplate or flywheel bolts.

Buy the list, subtract what you have, and call Butler with your cam target, converter and gear. Compression and cam timing are what make 467 inches behave on pump gas with EFI.
