Build Yours Like Butler is not a product line. It is the actual parts list behind engines Butler has built, broken out so you can buy the same combination one piece at a time. Every fastener, gasket, seal and accessory that went on the engine is in the list, which is where most home builds come up short.

Five builds are laid out here, from a 500hp+ pump gas muscle car engine in carbureted and Holley EFI form, to a 600hp+ TorqStorm supercharged 455, to a pair of 700hp+ 535 cu. in. engines on the IA II aftermarket block.

More About Build Yours Like Butler

1. What These Lists Are For

Anyone can pick a rotating assembly and a set of heads. What stalls a build is the third trip to the parts counter for a cam bolt, a valley pan grommet or the right rear main seal.

Complete combinationseach build includes the rotating assembly, heads, cam and valvetrain, induction and ignition, plus the oil pan, timing cover, water pump, starter, dipstick, bolt kits and gaskets that actually make it an engine.
Proven togetherthese are parts Butler has run as a set, not a theoretical list. The clearance and fitment problems were solved during the build.
Buy what you needif you already have heads or a carburetor, take the rest of the list and skip that line.

2. Choosing the Build to Start From

Pick by the block you have and the fuel system you want, then adjust. The five lists are deliberately different engines, not one engine dressed five ways.

500hp+ on a 400 blocka 4.250" stroke 460-467 cu. in. combination, offered as a carbureted build and as a Holley EFI build. The most transferable starting point for a street muscle car.
600hp+ supercharged 455a 467-474 cu. in. 455 with a TorqStorm blower, built at lower compression for boost.
700hp+ 535 cu. in. IA IItwo versions, aluminum block with a hydraulic roller and EFI, or cast block with a solid roller and a carburetor.

3. How to Use a List Without Getting Burned

These lists are specific to the engine they came off, and a few items do not carry across.

Main journal sizea 350, 389 or 400 uses 3.00" main parts and a 421, 428 or 455 uses 3.25". Rear main seals and cranks are not interchangeable between them.
Aftermarket blocks are their own thingIA II builds use specific block plugs, oil pump driveshaft and head gasket bores. Do not substitute factory-block parts.
Balance and yearflexplate and flywheel choice follows whether the assembly is internally or externally balanced, and several brackets and covers are year-specific.

Work through the list you pick, mark what you already own, and call Butler with the rest. The parts are the easy half; matching the cam and compression to your car is the conversation worth having.
