The Part That Wears Out — Air Cleaner Elements for Pontiac V8s
The air cleaner element is the only part of the assembly that wears out, and the one that sets how much air the engine actually sees. On a Pontiac V8 the choice comes down to two numbers, the diameter it has to match and the height your hood allows, and then whether you want paper or a washable reusable filter.

1. Height is the decision, diameter is the constraint
Almost every round element here is 14 inches in diameter because that is what the bases and lids on a Pontiac use. Height is where you have a real choice, and more height means more filter area.
| 2 inch | the low profile option. Use it when the hood is close or you are running a tall spacer under the air cleaner and have given away the room. |
| 3 inch | the usual choice, and the height most 14 inch assemblies are built around. |
| 4 inch | the most filter area in a 14 inch round, for a bigger engine or a car with the hood clearance to use it. |
2. Reusable cotton or paper
Both filter. They differ in what you do with them after a few thousand miles.
| Reusable cotton | oiled cotton gauze in every height, offered with red or black oil so you can match the rest of the engine bay. You clean and re-oil it rather than replacing it, which is the cheaper path on a car that gets driven. |
| Paper | the Moroso 14 inch by 3 inch white paper element. Throw it away and fit another. This is the right answer on a fresh engine or after a dusty event, where you want a known-clean filter without a wash and dry cycle. |
3. Shaker elements are a different shape entirely
A second-generation Trans Am shaker does not take a round 14 inch element. The PTF drop bases use a cone shaped washable element, and there are two of them: a 3 inch that fits the PTF drop bases, and a 4 inch tall version that fits the standard size PTF drop base and lid but requires the taller Mega Scoop above it. Ordering the tall element without the tall scoop leaves you with a filter that will not fit under the hood.
4. Matching the element to the base and lid you already own
An element does not float on its own. It has to seal against the base below it and the lid above it, and on a 14 inch round assembly all three parts have to agree on diameter. Height is the variable, and it is set by the space you have left after the base drop and any spacer under the air cleaner.

If you are replacing an element in an existing assembly, take the old one out and measure it before ordering. Height is the number people guess wrong.
