Pontiac V8 Engine Accessories- A/C Compressors, Power Steering Pumps, Alternators
What the Belt Drives — Engine Accessories- A/C Compressors, Power Steering Pumps, Alternators for Pontiac V8s
Engine accessories are the things the belt actually drives: the alternator that keeps up with electric fans and an EFI pump, the power steering pump and its plumbing, and the A/C compressor. When you rebuild the front of a Pontiac V8 these usually get replaced alongside the pulleys, because a new drive on tired accessories is a false economy.
Butler stocks March Performance and Powermaster one-wire alternators, a chrome Saginaw power steering pump with remote reservoir and braided hose kits, a Sanden A/C compressor with serpentine pulley, and Butler 6-rib serpentine belts.

More About Engine Accessories- A/C Compressors, Power Steering Pumps, Alternators
1. Alternators
Two GM case styles cover almost every Pontiac front drive, and the difference between them is mostly what is included.
| GM 10SI | March's polished 10SI alternators come in 100 amp and 140 amp one-wire versions, 7" in diameter with 6 and 12 o'clock mounting positions. They use neoprene-sealed bearings and a low cut-in voltage regulator so the amps keep flowing at low idle, which matters on a big cam engine. No pulley or fan is supplied, so plan to buy or reuse those. |
| GM 12SI | Powermaster's 12SI style alternators are offered at 100 amp and 140 amp, polished or black, made in the USA. They work as one wire or three wire, are internally regulated, and include a single groove V-belt pulley. The charge wire is not included. |
| Choosing | Pick the amperage by load, not by habit. Electric fans, an EFI fuel pump, an electric water pump and a big stereo add up fast, and a one-wire conversion simplifies a rewired car considerably. |
2. Power Steering
The pump, where the fluid lives, and how it gets there. These parts are usually bought as a group when a front drive changes.
| Pump | A chrome keyed Saginaw type pump with a 5/8 pilot shaft, supplied with keyway and nut, a 5/8 inverted flare pressure fitting and a 3/8-18 NPT return. On 1971-1974 cars the return hose clocking is not as original but works fine for the application. |
| Remote reservoir | A billet aluminum remote reservoir with mounting bracket and hardware, 3/8" NPT ports, in polished or black. This is how you get a clean front on a serpentine conversion where the pump has no integral can. |
| Hose kits | Stainless braided hose kits for a remotely mounted reservoir, built for GM Type II pumps feeding a GM steering box from 1978 or older with flare fittings. One kit includes pump-to-box, box-to-reservoir and reservoir-to-pump hoses with -6AN and -10AN ends and the adapters for the common fittings, so the whole circuit arrives in one box. |
| Pulley covers | Aluminum nose covers for power steering pulleys, in chrome or black, to finish the pulley face. |
3. Air Conditioning
One compressor covers the modern conversion.
| Sanden 508 | A polished Sanden 508 compressor designed for HFC-134a refrigerant with a serpentine pulley already fitted. If you are converting to serpentine and keeping A/C, this is the compressor the all-inclusive systems are built around. |
4. Belts and Spacers
The last two things people forget when the front of the engine goes together.
| 6-rib serpentine belts | Butler stocks them in 65", 66", 68.5", 69.5" and 96" lengths. Any change in pulley diameter or accessory position changes the belt you need, so measure at mock-up. |
| Fan spacers | Aluminum flex fan spacer kits with .625 pilots and 5/16-24 bolts, to set fan depth in the shroud once the water pump pulley has changed. |
Order these with the pulleys rather than after them. The pulley you choose decides the belt length, whether the A/C compressor needs a serpentine or V-belt face, and whether the alternator needs its own pulley and fan.
