Butler Performance has the rings for your Pontiacs. Stock rings came in a thickness of 5/64 5/64 3/16 (455- 5/64 1/16 3/16) mostly made of iron, while most aftermarket rings are thinner 1/16 1/16 3/16. These thinner, modern rings help reduce friction which leads to reduced cylinder wall wear leading to longer engine life. Drop in rings must be ring gapped appropriately. They may need files slightly to set a proper gap. File fit rings come with .005" extra material for filing to set proper ring gap. For street engines we recommend .016-.018 ring gap. Proper ring gap is crucial to the expansion and contraction of the rings due to heat.
