Early Small Bore — 326 Pistons for Pontiac V8s
326 Pistons serve the smallest of the traditional Pontiac V8 bores. A 326 runs a 3.750" class bore, which is why the sets on this page are listed for 3.750" and 3.780" finished bores and nothing larger. Get the bore and the valve angle right and a 326 rebuild is straightforward; get either wrong and the pistons will not clear.

1. The 326 bore and what the sets are cut for
The 326 is the narrowest bore in the traditional Pontiac V8 line, and the piston choice reflects that.
| 3.750" and 3.780" | The two finished bores Butler lists DSS forged 326 pistons for. Both sizes are also covered in the Total Seal file fit ring sets Butler stocks for this block. |
| Stock stroke | The 326 sets are listed for a 3.750" stroke on a 6.625" rod, with a 1.710" compression height and a .980" pin included. |
| Stroker path | Butler lists a custom Ross 326 piston for a 4.250" stroke at 1.295" compression height on a 1/16, 1/16, 3/16 ring pack. That is a fully custom part, built to your bore. |
2. Valve angle is the 326 gotcha
Early Pontiac heads and later heads do not use the same valve angle, and a 326 rebuild often mixes eras.
| 1964-66 22 degree heads | Some early style 326 pistons are cut for these heads only. If your block is early and the heads came with it, that is the pocket you need. |
| Late model and Edelbrock heads | A different pocket entirely. A piston cut for early heads will not give you correct clearance behind a later valve. |
| Dual valve pocket | The DSS forged -7cc flat top and -14cc dish sets Butler stocks for the 326 are cut with dual valve pockets to fit both the 14 degree and 22 degree heads, which is the safe choice when the heads are not finalized. |
3. Rings, pins and rod clearance
| Rings included | The dual pocket DSS 326 sets ship with a 1.2mm, 1.2mm, 3mm ring pack. If you buy a set without rings, order file fit rings to the finished bore. |
| Pins | .980" full floating pins with double True Arc pin locks are included on the DSS sets. |
| Rod clearance | Butler flags this on the forged listings. Stock cast rods may need the small end narrowed and the balance pad removed to clear the inside of the pistons. |
| Compression | Butler recommends no more than 9.5:1 on cast iron heads and no more than 10.5:1 on aluminum heads for pump gas. Give the counter your chamber volume and the dish gets picked for you. |
The 326 is a small enough family that a short conversation settles it. Measure the bore, identify the heads, and the right piston set is usually obvious from there.
