The air cleaner lid is the one part of the intake path you choose almost entirely on appearance, and the one people see every time the hood comes up. It clamps the element to the base, so it has to match the diameter of what is under it, and on a Pontiac V8 that is usually a 14" round stack.

1. Pick the look
All of these are 14" round lids for a standard 14" air cleaner stack. What separates them is material, finish and style.
| Muscle car style steel | A 14" round steel lid in black or chrome for the factory muscle car look. This is the right call on a car you want to read as period correct. |

2. Filtered lids
Not every lid is solid. A filtered lid puts additional media in the top of the stack instead of sealing it off.

3. Custom milled and Tri-Power
If the lid is going to be the signature on the engine, Butler stocks a billet lid you specify yourself, plus a set for Tri-Power cars.

4. Hardware and fitment
Hold-down hardware differs by lid material, and it is the detail that sends people back to the counter.
| Steel lids | Use a stud, cut to fit for length, with a wing nut. Butler stocks a 5" cut-to-fit stud with wing nut in 1/4-20 thread as a separate part. |
| Cast and billet lids | Use a low-profile tapered head screw, also cut to fit. The custom milled lids come with their mounting bolt. |
| Diameter has to match | A 14" lid belongs on a 14" base and element. If you are running the 12" oval assembly, its lid is part of that assembly. |
| Height still counts | A lid changes stack height a little. If you are already at the limit of hood clearance with a tall element, check before swapping a flat steel lid for a deeper cast one. |
The lid is the one place in the air and fuel path where you can spend on looks without costing yourself anything. Get the base drop and element height sorted first, then pick the top that suits the car.
