Feeding the Engine — Air Cleaners/Filters for Pontiac V8s
Everything a Pontiac V8 makes starts with the air it can pull, and air cleaners and filters are the last thing in that path before the carburetor or throttle body. The stack has to seal to the 5-1/8" neck, give the engine enough filter area at the top of the rpm range, and still close the hood.

1. Start at the neck, then measure to the hood
Two dimensions decide almost every air cleaner question on a Pontiac. The first is the neck the base has to seal on. The second is how much room is left between the top of the carb or throttle body and the underside of the hood.

| Drop bases buy you height | A 7/8" or 1-1/8" drop base sinks the element below the carb flange, which is how you run a 3" or 4" element in a car that would not close on a flat base. |

3. Shaker cars follow different rules
A second-gen Trans Am with a functional shaker does not use a conventional air cleaner at all, and the parts are not interchangeable with the round assemblies above.

If you are still deciding, work backwards from the hood. Measure the clearance you have with the intake and carb or throttle body in place, then pick the base drop and element height that fit inside it. The lid is the only part of the stack you get to choose purely on looks.
