A second-gen Trans Am with a functional shaker feeds the engine through the hood, not through a conventional round air cleaner. That makes the drop base under the shaker a fitment part first and an airflow part second: it has to clear the carb or throttle body, sit at the right height for the shaker, and still seal.
Butler stocks Pontiac drop base shaker assemblies with cone-shaped washable elements for 1973-79 Trans Am 326-455 Pontiac engines running an Edelbrock Performer RPM, Victor Jr or Northwind NW-4150 intake, plus replacement 3" and 4" cone elements. The tall element requires the tall Mega Scoop.

1. What the assembly is
This is not a round air cleaner. It is a drop base and cone element sized to live under a Pontiac shaker scoop.
| Application | Listed for 1973-79 Trans Am with 326-455 Pontiac engines, running an Edelbrock Performer RPM, Victor Jr or Northwind NW-4150 intake with a Quadrajet or Holley carb. |

2. Which shaker it will and will not fit
This is where most of these orders go wrong. The shaker on the car is not necessarily a Pontiac shaker.
| Pontiac 400/455 shaker only | Butler's data is explicit that it works only on a Pontiac engine with a Pontiac 400/455 shaker, not an Oldsmobile shaker. |
| Will not work | Not with 403 or 301 engines, and not with a 350 Rocket, 403, 455 Olds or 305/350 small block Chevy shaker, even if the car came that way. Those have different heights, offsets and base plates. Not for High Port heads. |
| 1970-72 Trans Am | Not as-is on a car with electric actuator flapper doors. The shaker base plate must be changed to a 1973-76 unit with a retaining ring added. |
| Other exceptions | Not for a 1974 GTO, and possibly not the early 1977 shaker that was only 2" tall. The shaker itself must be cut for the air inlet. |
3. Carburetor, EFI and spacer clearance
What sits under the base decides whether it goes on cleanly.
| Holley and Quadrajet | Both electric choke and non-electric choke versions will work. |
| Edelbrock | Non-electric choke will work with a Russell banjo fitting. Electric choke Edelbrock carbs will not work. |
| EFI | The drop base may need modification at the fuel inlet fitting. Butler notes a -6AN to O-ring 3/8 steel 45 degree fitting works well on Sniper and Sniper 2 systems instead of bending the pan. Holley XP style carbs with large extended float bowls may need the radius inside the base massaged to clear. |
| Modified means yours | The drop base is not returnable once modified. |
| Spacers | Shaker cars are limited to 7/8" of added height, so the taller aluminum spacers are out. It can be made to fit with a spacer on a stock height manifold. |
Identify the shaker on the car rather than the badge on the fender, confirm the intake, and check the fuel inlet before ordering. Wash the cone element with gentle soap and hot water only.
