Pontiac V8 Distributor Caps and Rotors
Where the Spark Jumps — Distributor Caps and Rotors for Pontiac V8s
The cap and rotor are where high voltage has to jump a gap eight times per revolution, and they are the first parts to show it. Carbon tracking, a burned terminal or a tired rotor on a Pontiac V8 reads like a miss under load long before anything looks obviously wrong.
Butler stocks MSD and GM-style HEI caps and rotors molded from Rynite with brass terminals, a Pontiac cap and rotor kit in black or red, racing and adjustable rotors, a high output HEI module, replacement magnetic pickups, and caps for the RPC and Top Street Performance distributors.

More About Distributor Caps and Rotors
1. Match the Cap to the Distributor You Have
Caps are not universal, and the fastest way to order the wrong one is to go by appearance.
| GM HEI | The MSD replacement GM HEI cap is used with the matching HEI rotor. MSD's extra duty caps are molded from high quality voltage insulating material with low resistance terminals. |
| MSD 8528 and 8563 | These two distributors share a cap with HEI terminals, stocked in black and in red, and MSD also lists a Pontiac cap and rotor kit that pairs the cap with the rotor button in either color. |
| RPC HEI | Caps with HEI terminals in black and in red are listed specifically for the RPC Pontiac HEI distributor. |
| Top Street Performance | The 208 series cap is a high strength polymer with solid brass terminals and comes complete with the rotor, designed for the TSP Pro Billet and Ready to Run distributors. |
| Terminal style | MSD's popular V8 caps are injection molded in house from DuPont Rynite and use spark plug-style terminals, which lock the wire connection better than a socket. |
2. Rotors, and the One That Solves an EFI Problem
The rotor is cheap and it is the part doing the actual switching. There are three reasons to buy one.
| Replacement | The MSD GM HEI rotor button is injection molded from Rynite for strength and high dielectric properties. |
| Racing | MSD's racing rotor for GM style and MSD distributors is designed for high rpm and is standard on most MSD Pro-Billet distributors. |
| Adjustable race rotor | When you install EFI, most systems require ignition timing to be advanced for the ECU, and that throws off rotor phasing. The two-piece adjustable rotor is the fix, and it is the part most people do not know exists until the car starts crossfiring. |
3. Under the Cap: Modules, Pickups and Coil Changes
Some of the best value in this category is not the cap at all.
| HEI module | The MSD high output HEI module installs in non-computer controlled four-pin HEI housings, produces 8.5 amps, adds advanced dwell control and carries a built-in adjustable rev limiter you can set with the engine running and without removing the cap. |
| Magnetic pickup | MSD's replacement magnetic pickup is the same maintenance-free assembly found in all MSD Pro-Billet distributors and comes with the two pin connector installed. |
| External coil on an HEI | A modified HEI dust cover lets you pull the internal coil out of the distributor and run a more powerful external coil instead, without changing distributors. |
4. When to Replace Them
Caps and rotors are a service item, not a lifetime part.
| Look inside | Grey or black tracking lines running down the inside of the cap mean voltage has found a path it should not have. A cleaned cap with a track in it will fail again. |
| With a wire set | If you are installing new plug wires, this is the moment to put a fresh cap and rotor in. The terminals and the boots wear as a pair. |
| Match the color | Caps come in black and red on most of these families, so a blacked-out or a red-accented engine bay can be kept consistent. |
Order the rotor that goes with the cap you are buying. MSD lists them as pairs for a reason, and mixing families across brands is how a good distributor gets blamed for a bad miss.
