1. Divider plates
Because the Pontiac water pump mounts to the timing cover rather than the block, the divider plate behind the impeller is what actually splits coolant between the two sides of the engine. Clearance between the impeller and that plate is also what builds system pressure, so a pitted, bent or wrong-thickness plate costs you cooling even with a brand new pump bolted in front of it.

2. Sleeves, studs and sealing
Two sleeves carry coolant from the timing cover into the pump on 1969-79 engines. They cost very little, they sit behind the pump, and they are a common reason a Pontiac drips after a pump change.

| Alignment studs | a set of two studs that hold the divider plate and pump in position while you start the bolts. Pull them afterward and replace them with bolts, unless the pump is thin enough to leave enough thread exposed. |

3. Heater hose fittings and fan spacers
Two more jobs that get sorted out while the front of the engine is open and accessible.

None of this shows once the engine is together, and all of it is buried behind the water pump. Replace the plate, the sleeves and the o-rings as a set any time the pump comes off, and check the plate against the cover for flatness before you bolt it back up.
