Pontiac V8 Crate Engines- Butler Built
Built, Dyno Tuned, Crated — Crate Engines- Butler Built for Pontiac V8s
A Butler Built crate engine is a complete, running Pontiac V8: short block, heads, cam, induction, ignition and accessories, assembled in Lawrenceburg, dyno tested and tuned, then crated and shipped insured. The engines shown here are builds Butler has completed and delivered, and they are the clearest picture of what a turn-key Butler engine actually contains.
Every one is built to order around a customer's car. Past builds have run from a 389-block 447 cu. in. to 467 cu. in. 400-block combinations, carbureted, Holley EFI and TorqStorm supercharged, all on pump gas.

More About Crate Engines- Butler Built
1. What a Turn-Key Butler Engine Includes
Turn-key means the engine arrives ready to drop in and wire up, not as a long block with a list of things still to buy.
| The whole engine | prepped block, balanced rotating assembly, Butler billet timing gears and chain, oil pump, hydraulic roller cam and lifters, custom pushrods, roller rockers, cylinder heads, intake, valley pan, head gaskets, water pump, timing cover and mini starter. |
| Induction and spark | carburetor or Holley EFI with matching ignition, and Butler-built plug wires. |
| Finished details | hand-fabricated CNC logo valve covers, correct-year engine paint, break-in and run oil, and an SFI approved flexplate or flywheel. |
| Paperwork | a complete blueprint sheet, plus a dyno video, dyno sheet and the tune. It ships fully crated and insured with an engine stand and casters. |
2. Carbureted, EFI or Supercharged
The short block is usually the same conversation. The induction is what changes the character of the engine and the install in your car.
| Carbureted | the simplest to install and service. Butler has built these with Holley carburetors and MSD Pro Billet ignition on 460 and 467 cu. in. combinations. |
| EFI | Holley Sniper and Super Sniper systems with Hyperspark ignition, self-tuning and cold-start friendly. Past turn-key EFI builds have run 447, 461, 462 and 467 cu. in. |
| Supercharged | a TorqStorm blower kit on a 462 cu. in. Pontiac, which is a different compression and fuel conversation from the naturally aspirated engines. |
3. The Block Under It
Butler starts with the same cores you would, and the machine work is what separates them.
| The Butler Process | cleaned, magnafluxed, sonic tested, deburred, bored and honed with a torque plate, line honed with ARP main studs and deck squared. |
| Upgrades where the power justifies them | past builds have used 4-bolt main conversions with Butler CNC billet caps, main studs and lifter bore braces, with forged cranks and H-beam rods. |
| Heads to match | CNC ported Edelbrock heads in D-port and round port, sized to the combination rather than to the biggest number available. |
4. How Ordering One Works
These are not shelf items. Each engine on this page was specified for one customer and one car.
| Start with the car | chassis, transmission, gear ratio, converter, fuel and how the car gets used decide the cam and the compression before anything else. |
| Butler reviews the spec | an engine tech goes through the combination and issues an itemized build sheet before machine work starts, so changes happen on paper. |
| Plan the install | headers, oil pan clearance, accessory drive and fuel supply are car-side items. Sort them while the engine is being built, not after it lands. |
If a build shown here is close to what you want, use it as a starting point and call. The value in a Butler engine is the specification conversation as much as the parts in it.
