Pontiac V8 Aftermarket Blocks (455-541 cu. In.)

No Factory Ceiling — Aftermarket Blocks (455-541 cu. In.) for Pontiac V8s

An aftermarket block removes the limits a factory Pontiac casting puts on a build — cylinder wall thickness, main webbing, and how much stroke the case will swing. The rotating assembly is what turns that extra capability into displacement, and here the range runs from 455 to 541 cubic inches.

Butler builds balanced stroker rotating assemblies for aftermarket blocks at 4.000", 4.250" and 4.500" stroke, all on Butler/Ross forged pistons with Total Seal rings, performance bearings and Butler Process internal balancing done in our own shop.

More About Aftermarket Blocks (455-541 cu. In.)

1. Three strokes, one continuous range

The three assemblies overlap deliberately, so the bore you choose decides where in the range you land.

4.000" stroke, 455-481 ciThe shortest stroke Butler builds for an aftermarket block, and already more displacement than a factory 455. A sensible choice when rpm matters more than peak torque.
4.250" stroke, 482-511 ciThe middle of the range, and the stroke most large-displacement Pontiac builds settle on.
4.500" stroke, 511-541 ciThe top of the range. This is the assembly behind Butler's 535 ci pump-gas combination on an aluminum IAII block.

2. What an aftermarket block changes

No casting lotteryThe block restrictions that shape factory builds — thin main webbing on certain castings, limited cylinder wall after two rebuilds — do not apply. What the assembly can do is no longer limited by what survived fifty years in a car.
Bore range opens upDisplacement is quoted as a wide span on these because the bore is genuinely a choice rather than whatever the old block cleaned up at.
Everything still gets balancedButler assemblies are internally balanced through the Butler Process, with rods and pistons weighed and pin-fitted, the crank computer balanced to the assembly, and a balance card in the box. A neutral-balanced flexplate or flywheel and balancer are required.

3. Spec it as a whole engine

PistonsGenuine Ross forged pistons on Butler's exclusive true-Pontiac strut-style forging — among the lightest and strongest available, and nitrous-safe. Flat top or a custom dish machined to your compression target.
PinsStandard Ross 5115 chromoly pins are rated to 800 hp naturally aspirated. For higher horsepower and power-adder builds, .220" wall bearing-steel pins are the upgrade.
RingsTotal Seal Classic Race plasma-moly as standard, with AP Advanced Stainless for longer life and tighter tolerance, or Gapless Top to seal cylinder pressure between the top and second rings.
Lead timeCustom dish pistons machined to a compression target run 10 to 12 weeks, which on a project at this level usually needs to be the first order placed, not the last.

Builds in this range are rarely a parts list assembled one page at a time. Tell us the block, the heads and what the car is for, and we will spec the assembly against the rest of the combination before anything is machined.
