1. Assembled, Custom Fitted or Cut to Fit
These are three different levels of work on your end, and all three have a place.
| Butler custom sets | Measured, cut, assembled and ohmed in Butler's own shop, with separators installed and the wires numbered. They are routed around the engine instead of over the valve covers, which is why fitment is decided by the engine rather than the car. They fit all Pontiac V8 326 through 455 in any chassis, and they clear factory A/C as well as March and Vintage Air. Coil wire and separators are included. Butler has also teamed with Moroso on an exclusive assembled Ultimate Pontiac set using Ultra-40 race wire, coming soon. |
| Custom fitted MSD sets | Precut to specification for an HEI cap in red or black, in 8.5mm Super Conductor. These do not include the coil wire, which is a separate 18" part with 90 degree terminals and boots on both ends. |
| Universal cut to fit | Extra long 8.5mm wire with the plug end already terminated and the distributor end open, supplied with both socket-style and spark plug-style boots and terminals plus a mini stripper crimper. The set includes two 56", two 50", two 48" and three 32" wires. This is the honest choice when headers make a premade set awkward. |
| Budget and tight clearance | MSD Street Fire 8mm cut-to-fit multi angle HEI sets, and Moroso Ultra 40 universal sets in 8.65mm with 45 and 135 degree plug boots and the coil wire included. |
2. The Distributor End Is the Gotcha
More wire sets get returned over this than over length.
| HEI socket terminals | Butler's assembled sets use HEI-style socket terminals, which fit factory GM HEI, MSD Pro Billet, the Edelbrock Pro Tuner, Holley dual sync and HyperSpark, the Pro Series Pro Billet, and any aftermarket billet distributor using an HEI-style socket cap. |
| Points distributors | Those assembled sets will not fit an original small cap points distributor, which uses spark plug-style male terminals. For a points car, order the universal cut-to-fit set and install the correct terminals, or call Butler and have a set built. |
| Universal sets cover both | The MSD universal sets ship with terminals and boots for older socket style caps and for spark plug-style terminals, so the cap style does not have to be decided before you order. |
3. Wire Itself
What is inside the jacket decides how much of the spark arrives and how much interference gets out.
| MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor | 40 to 50 ohms in a 12" length, the lowest resistance of any helically wound wire, with over 40 feet of conductor wound into every foot of plug wire and a ferro-magnetic center core that acts as an interference choke. |
| Moroso Ultra 40 | 8.65mm with 40 ohms per foot and a spiral wound conductor, with male HEI and female socket distributor ends both supplied. |
| Street Fire 8mm | A helically wound conductor with a Kevlar core at 500 ohms per foot in a silicone and synthetic jacket. |
4. Do Not Skip the Separators
A good wire in a bad place still fails.
| What they do | Separators hold the wires apart and away from the headers, which is where heat and crossfire problems start. |
| What is included | Butler's assembled sets and Butler's complete ignition kits include separators. Clamp-style 8mm separator kits and looms are stocked on their own in the accessories section. |
| Coil wire length | Because a coil can end up almost anywhere on a Pontiac, Butler supplies a 30" coil wire with the assembled Ultra-40 set rather than guessing. |
Standard Pontiac firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Number the wires as they come off and the job gets a lot shorter.
