Pontiac V8 421 Blocks (427-489 cu. In.)
Keeping an Early Big Inch Alive — 421 Blocks (427-489 cu. In.) for Pontiac V8s
The 421 is an early big-inch Pontiac and a block worth keeping, which is why its rotating assemblies are built as custom packages rather than off-the-shelf kits. Crank, rods, pistons, pins, rings and bearings are matched to the bore the block actually cleans up at, then balanced as one unit.
Butler builds 421 block assemblies at 4.210", 4.250" and 4.500" stroke, including a defined 461 ci flat-top stroker combination, all on Butler/Ross forged pistons with Total Seal rings and Butler Process internal balancing.

More About 421 Blocks (427-489 cu. In.)
1. The four 421 assemblies
Each is a custom balanced package for the 421 block, and the stroke sets the displacement.
| 4.210" stroke, 450-457 ci | Butler's custom balanced rotating assembly — the mildest step, and the one that keeps the most of the block's original character. |
| 4.250" stroke, 453-461 ci | The custom balanced stroker assembly, with bore and piston shape specified to your build. |
| 461 ci flat top, .062" over | A Butler/Ross defined combination — a 4.155" bore on a 4.250" stroke with flat top pistons, balanced. Worth a look when the 421 needs the extra clean-up cut anyway. |
| 4.500" stroke, 481-489 ci | The top of the 421 range, and the reason this category runs to 489 cubic inches. |
2. Why 421 assemblies are quoted as ranges
A 421 that has been apart before rarely comes back at a standard bore, so Butler quotes displacement as a span rather than a single figure.
| Bore decides the number | Options start at .030" over so the block cleans up and the rings seat in spec, and larger bores are available. Where your block ends up inside that window is where the displacement lands. |
| Pistons come last | Have the pistons in hand when the cylinders are honed so piston-to-wall clearance is set from the parts going in. |
| Compression is specified, not assumed | Tell us the chamber cc of your heads and the compression you want, and our techs work with Ross to design the piston to hit it. Custom dish pistons run a 10 to 12 week lead time. |
3. Before the block goes to the machine shop
| Have it checked | An early block that is going to carry a longer-stroke crank needs the mains, the deck and the cylinder walls inspected before any parts are ordered. |
| Balance and balance hardware | Every rotating assembly Butler sells has to be balanced. Ours are internally balanced through the Butler Process, which means a neutral-balanced flywheel or flexplate and a neutral harmonic balancer. |
The 421 is a block people keep for a reason, and the assemblies here are built to keep it usable rather than to turn it into something generic. Call with the casting and the bore you have and we will spec the rest around it.
