Butler Spec Head Gaskets

There's a reason we designed our very own head gaskets, it's because we know Pontiacs. Felpro gaskets have been used on Pontiac engines for years and after many failures we needed to provide a product that had more gasket area where its needed most. Water passes from the block into the head via water ducts or water jackets. This cools the cylinder walls and the heads. These water passages are located very close to the cylinder walls. Let's take a look at the differences in the Felpro and Butler designed gaskets.

FelPro Head Gasket

The Felpro head gasket was designed to match the hole size of the head instead of the block which does not add any additional flow since the water comes from the block and travels into the head via the smaller water holes. Unfortunately, Felpro head gaskets do not leave much material between the bore and the water hole. This has lead to numerous failures over the years that we have seen first hand.

Butler Spec Head Gaskets

We reached out to some of the best head gasket makers in the country and created a Pontiac specific head gasket to alleviate this common failure. We matched the gasket water hole size to the size of the water hole on the block in order to leave a much larger amount of material between the bore and the water hole. The water flows in the direction of block to head so the reduced hole size does not restrict any water flow whatsoever.

Our 19374 head gasket is designed for 400-455 blocks with no chamfers (valve notches) or blocks with the later style notches in the 9:00 and 3:00 positions

The 19375 head gasket is a universal Pontiac head gasket that will fit all blocks but also has the chambers for the 326-389-421 (and Early 1967 400)

We did not stop with standard head gaskets but now all of our Cometic multi-layered gaskets have the Butler Spec water holes and are exclusive to Butler Performance.
