Hy-Lift Johnson Pontiac SE Retro-Fit Hydraulic Roller Lifter with Pressure Pin Oiling Set/16 HLJ-A-2375SE
Description
The Pontiac retrofit hydraulic roller lifter we reach for first. Hy-Lift Johnson builds these in the USA on OE-volume tooling, and the "SE" spec combines the two features that actually matter in a hard-run Pontiac: pressurized roller pin oiling and a tight, slow-leakdown hydraulic body. Set of 16, ready to run.
What the "SE" Actually Means
"E" – Direct Shot® Pressure Pin Oiling. Instead of relying on splash and drip to reach the needle bearings, Hy-Lift Johnson's patented Direct Shot system injects pressurized oil straight into the roller pin. A proprietary oil band design keeps debris from packing the supply hole — the number one killer of retrofit rollers. Hy-Lift Johnson's extreme-duty testing shows durability gains up to 300% over conventional splash-oiled designs.
"S" – Slow Leakdown Design. These are built to a leakdown rate of 90–120 seconds, at the top of the scale. Total clearance between the lifter body I.D. and the piston assembly is held under 0.000120" — roughly 1/30 the thickness of a human hair. That tight tolerance does three things:
- Acts like a solid lifter. Very little effective loss of lift or duration at any RPM — you get the cam profile the grinder intended, all the way to the valve.
- Balances cylinder to cylinder. A much narrower leakdown spread across all 16 means every cylinder behaves the same.
- Handles spring pressure. Think heavy-duty shock absorber. These won't collapse under the spring loads that pump up a standard-travel lifter.
- No lash, no adjustment. All the RPM benefit of a solid, none of the maintenance.
The one trade-off: if the valvetrain floats because the springs are outmatched by the RPM, a slow-leakdown lifter will try to take up the excess clearance and can hang a valve open. Spring the engine correctly for your cam and this is a non-issue — but don't run these behind tired or undersized springs.

Fitment & Installation Notes — Read Before You Order
- Aftermarket valley pan required. Retrofit roller lifters sit taller than flat tappets and the link bars will contact the bottom of most factory valley pans. Our TPP-041S pan has the clearance you need.
- Roller camshaft required. These will not run on a flat tappet cam.
- Aluminum heads? We recommend restricted pushrods with this lifter. Aluminum heads have less oil drain capacity than cast iron and the valve covers can flood.
- Check your oil band engagement. Pontiac blocks vary considerably in lifter bore casting height and oil hole position, and cam base circle diameter varies core to core. With the cam installed, measure from the base circle to the bottom edge of all 16 lifter bores and confirm the oil relief band isn't within .060–.080" of dropping out the bottom. A dropped-out band depressurizes the lifter and kills it.
- Check lifter bore wear. Optimum lifter-to-bore clearance is .0015–.0018". We routinely measure 40- and 50-year-old Pontiac blocks at .0022–.003". Excess clearance causes lifter noise and dumps a serious amount of oil into the valley — just .001" of extra clearance across 16 bores pumps over a gallon per minute of additional oil into the lifter valley at higher RPM. Bushing the bores is the fix.
- Soak and clean before installation. We recommend this with every hydraulic roller lifter regardless of brand. Factory test fluid and shipping anti-corrosion lubricant can gel over time on the shelf and gum up the hydraulic mechanism.
- Don't sit on an adjusted valvetrain. If a fresh engine will sit for a long stretch after the rockers are set, back them off. Spring pressure holds the lifters fully collapsed and they can stick.
Why Butler Stocks This One
There are only a handful of companies in the world actually manufacturing hydraulic roller lifters — most of the big cam names buy theirs from one of them. Hy-Lift Johnson is one of the real manufacturers, they build in America, and they're the only Pontiac retrofit lifter we can get with pressure pin oiling and slow-leakdown travel in the same part number.
Just as importantly: we can get them. We keep this set on the shelf and behind our own engine builds, so you're not waiting on a backorder to finish a motor. If you've been running the dimensionally identical Johnson lifter, this is a direct swap with the added Direct Shot oiling.
