Made in the USA, by a real lifter manufacturer. If you've been following the flat tappet conversation over the last decade, you already know the problem: the market filled up with cheap offshore lifters, and cam lobes started going flat during break-in on engines that were built right. Hy-Lift Johnson still manufactures domestically on OE-volume tooling — this is the standard-replacement hydraulic flat tappet we put in our own Pontiac builds and the one we hand a customer who doesn't want to gamble on a cam.
How It's Built
- Patented orifice metering valve. Meters oil to the rocker arms precisely instead of dumping it. On a Pontiac — where valvetrain oiling comes up through the pushrods — controlled metering means oil stays in the system where it belongs instead of flooding the valve covers at RPM.
- Continuous metering valve-to-pushrod-seat contact. The hardened pushrod seat stays in contact with the metering valve through the full cycle, which eliminates the excessive top-end oiling that shows up at high engine speeds in lesser designs.
- Extended piston length. Longer than a conventional hydraulic lifter piston, which puts more load-bearing surface between the piston and body. Less wear, longer service life, more consistent leakdown as the miles pile up.
- Lightweight check valve disc. Lower reciprocating mass in the check valve means faster response and better control across the whole load and RPM range.
- Crowned, hardened face. The convex face works with the taper ground into your cam lobes to spin the lifter in its bore — the mechanism that keeps a flat tappet alive.

Break-In — This Is Where Flat Tappets Live or Die
Almost every "bad lifter" call we take on a flat tappet engine traces back to break-in, springs, or oil. Get these right and a good domestic lifter will run for decades.
- New cam means new lifters. Every time. A flat tappet lifter and its lobe wear into each other and become a matched pair. Never put used lifters on a new cam. If you must reuse lifters on the original cam, every one has to go back on the exact lobe it came off of — keep them in a marked tray.
- Use a proper break-in lubricant on the lobes and lifter faces. Assembly oil alone is not enough on a flat tappet.
- Run a high-zinc break-in oil. Modern API service oils have had ZDDP levels cut way back for catalytic converter compatibility. A flat tappet needs that zinc and phosphorus. Use a dedicated break-in oil or additive, and keep a high-zinc oil in it afterward.
- Watch your spring pressure. Excessive seat pressure during break-in is a cam killer. If your springs are aggressive, break the engine in on light break-in springs or pull the inner springs, then install the final springs afterward.
- Break it in at RPM. 20 minutes at varying engine speed between 1,500 and 2,500 RPM — never at idle. Lobes are splash-lubricated and idle doesn't throw enough oil.
- Soak the lifters in clean oil before installation and prime the engine before the first start.
- Confirm the lifters are rotating. A lifter that won't spin in its bore will wipe its lobe. Check bore condition and cleanliness before assembly.
This is a flat tappet lifter and must be run with a flat tappet camshaft. Set your preload with the correct pushrod length for your combination — if you're not sure what that is for your heads, rockers, and block deck, we'll figure it out with you.
Butler's Take
You can spend less on a set of lifters. What you can't do is un-flatten a lobe once it's gone, and you can't un-contaminate an engine once metal is circulating through it. For a Pontiac 326 through 455 running a hydraulic flat tappet cam, this is the honest, no-drama answer: American-made, OE-grade, and priced where a stock rebuild or a mild street build can absorb it without a second thought.

Purchase the lifters for fear of poor quality that have been being sold. They have worked great, the break-in was no problem. Revs to 5800 no problems.after about 7000 street miles they are quiet and working well.
