Question:
My old starter had the 12volt wire and two smaller wire an “R” and “S” wire. The new starter has only one small pigtail wire along with the12 volt wire. What is the proper way to wire the new starter with my current wire set up?
From IMI
These two smaller wires are usually purple (S) and yellow (R).
The S (solenoid) wire will go to the pigtail supplied and clip into spade receptacle.
The R (run) wire will feed 12v to the coil in original wiring. This can be done by pulling the rubber boot on the opposite side of the main 12v battery connection away from its current position exposing the internal motor connection.
You can at this point remove the nut and connect the proper size ring terminal on the R wire. Connect the ring terminal to the stud and replace the nut and rubber boot.
It may be easier to connect the ring and a short amount of wire (pigtail) to the terminal, then connect into the R wire with spade or bullet male & female connectors. This may help the installation process.
