Melling Performance Pontiac High Vol./ 60 psi Oil Pump-with Pick-up MEL-10540

High pressure performance upgrade for the M-54D-S. The housing is CNC machined and phosphate coated. Includes 3/4” diameter oil pickup screen. We recommend a 1/8-1/4" oil pan to pickup clearance. Must be checked with all pumps and pickups regardless of oil pan.

Do I need to clean an oil pump before installing?

Yes, you should always clean and inspect a new oil pump before installation to remove manufacturing debris. While not mandatory for all, it is highly recommended to open, clean, inspect for tight spots, and lubricate the gears with assembly lube or clean engine oil to ensure proper operation upon startup. 

Key Pre-Installation Steps:

• Cleanliness: Ensure the work area is free of dust and contaminants.
• Inspection: Open the pump to check for any machining debris, burrs, or dry gears.
• Lubrication & Priming: Pack or fill the pump with engine assembly lube or oil to create a seal and ensure immediate oil pressure.
• Avoid Grease: Experts, such as Melling, advise against using heavy chassis grease to pack the pump, as it can clog internal passages.
